James E. Toner, of Arlington and formerly of Somerville, passed away suddenly at home on January 6, 2026, he was 59. Born and raised in Somerville, Jim was the son of the late Ellen (Martell) and Hugh Toner.


Jim lived simply, but enjoyed time spent walking around the city, shopping and trips to the beach. In summer months he could often be found at Revere Beach or taking day trips to Hampton or when not at the beach, he kept busy at the gym working out. He also enjoyed quite time at home watching his tv programs, movies or listening to music. Jim will be remembered by many for his jokes and great sense of humor.


Jim is survived by his siblings, Gloria Kennedy and her husband Patrick of Oklahoma, Patricia Toner of Somerville, Michael J. Toner and his partner Tanya Belen of Woburn, Edna Toner of Georgetown and the late Thomas J. Toner, Ellen Ellis and Hugh Toner. He was the dear uncle of Suzanne Ellis, Kenny Boschen, Richard Kennedy, Catherine Edwards, Philip Mitza, Dan Ryan, Jr., Tammi Toner, Jennifer Montijo, Kerri Ayala, Patrick Toner and many great nieces and nephews.


Visiting Hours will be held in the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway (Powder House Sq.) Somerville on Saturday morning, January 10th from 9:00AM – 11:00AM followed by a Funeral Procession to Fox Hill Cemetery, Billerica for a graveside service at 12:00PM. Relatives and friends invited to attend.

R.I.P. Jimmy. Happy Birthday. Hope you are celebrating up there with Buddy and Tom on April 1.

So sorry to hear of another loss to your family. I knew Jim through To. Also knew Buddy through Tom and Mike. Much too soon for any of them to be gone. My payers will be with your family. Tom was one of my best friends ever.

I´m so sorry for the family´s loss. He was so sweet and kind. I remember him when he was so very young.
