JAMES WILLIAMSON Obituary

James Clyde Williamson, Jr., 81, fondly known as "Wimpy," passed away in his home on July 23, 2018, after his brave battle with Alzheimer's. A loving husband of 56 years to Carol Williamson; a devoted father to Jimi, Troy, and Kristal; grandfather to Sophie and Harper; father-in-law to Gabriela Williamson and Chris Norman, and life-long friend to Donald "Flee" Lee and Brenda and Loris Longest. He was a lover of God, his family and friends, and all things sports. He graduated from Hopewell High School where he excelled at football, basketball, and baseball receiving numerous honors including the HHS Wall of Fame. He earned a scholarship to the University of Richmond for baseball and basketball and was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies, playing in their minor league system from 1958-61 in Elmira, Bakersfield, Tampa, Brunswick, Des Moines and Asheville. He played for the Phillies Organization for 4 seasons until an injury ended his baseball career. His love for sports continued as he coached numerous little league football and baseball teams in Enon and the State Champion American Legion Post 284 (Colonial Heights) Buccaneers in 1986. He was an active member of West Hopewell Church where he was a deacon and an elder for many years. He loved ministering to others and devoted over a decade to spreading God's love with special programs like Evangelism Explosion and the Prison Ministry. He worked as Credit Manager for Dillard Paper Company until 1985 when he became owner/operator of Williamson Recycling until he retired in 2005.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James, Sr. and Sophie Williamson; brother, Johnny Williamson, and sister, Mary Ann Cheek. He is survived by his siblings, Mildred Burnham, Louise Tiller (Buck); and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at West Hopewell Presbyterian Church, 2602 Wise Street, Hopewell, 23860, on Friday, July 27, at 11:00 AM with a lunch reception following in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, donations/contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association @ Alz.org. To the Family of Jimmy Williamson I Send My Deepest Sympathy And Prayers In Your Time Of Sorrow. Jimmy was a Hero of mine growing up and seeing all the trophies he had been honored with at HHSfor sports made me proud to know he was my cousin. Then playing with the Phillies, then his fast pitch softball career and the stories I heard as a kid from his team mates. and then his excellent golfing abilities. I never saw him without a smile on his face. And that's the way i'd like to remember him! Smiling! Tom Williamson, Youngest son of Thomas & Mary Williamson.
