Jim was a kind and thoughtful editor who always had an encouraging, welcoming attitude. Success in journalism largely depends on people taking a chance on you, I'm so grateful that he took a chance on me. I remember him telling me excitedly about his wife, his dog, and his candle company with fondness. I send warmth and love to his closest family and friends, his life sure left an impact- there are so many who are deeply appreciative of him.

Working with Jim was always a pleasure for me. I'm very sorry for your loss, and I hope you will find comfort in your own wealth of memories.

Jim's lovely, calm and nurturing demeanor was soothing in the news business. He was a mentor to me as I freelanced for news organizations including the Boston Globe. My favorite memories were taking a night assignment where he helped me listen to the police scanner (that takes a special person to respond to trauma at night) and our photo crit groups in Nahant. My deepest sympathies to Jane, Benjamin and Matthew.

I recall that he quickly became a contributor, always ready to take an assignment for the meager compensation that the Post could provide. He was a frequent and welcome young visitor to that small news office on Chestnut Street down the street from Mrs. Foster's Donuts. For the brief...

I was lucky to meet Jim at the very beginning of my career, and it wasn't until later that I realized how much of an impact he had on me. I also didn't realize how rare and genuine of a person he was. I will forever be grateful for the time and energy he invested in me - and I will hold onto the wonderful and fun memories that I have.

Dear Jane, Benjamin and Matthew, I was saddened to read the news about Jim's passing. I knew him in the 1990's when I worked as a photographer for UPI and then free lanced for the Boston Globe. We were in a small crit group in Nahant as well. He was always there to offer support. A calm person in the storm. Sending my condolences. Sincerely, ~Tsar
