Jan Atkins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 16, 2018.

Janny Rue Atkins passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 13th, 2018.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents Harrison and Verna Mae Bray, sister Gerri Gayle Bray and brother Richard Davis. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Tommy Atkins, son Tommy & Brenda Atkins, daughter Tonya & Eric Peterson, son Mark & Kathryn Atkins, grandchildren Sarah & Benjamin Frazier, Davis Atkins, Hannah Peterson, Harrison Peterson, Mary Alyson Atkins, Meagan Atkins and Mark Atkins, Jr., sister Melanie Williams, uncle Jimmy Davis, aunt June Featherston, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Janny Rue was born in 1936 in the small town of Healdton, Ok. She attended Healdton High School, graduating in 1954. She loved her small town and her small town loved her. She was Homecoming Queen, a member of the choir, and was installed as the Worthy Advisor of the Order of Rainbow Girls. The strong and independent woman she was, she achieved an accomplishment unheard of in that time by becoming the first female sportswriter for the HHS Bulldog Barkings staff. She was also a member of the FHA (Future Homemakers of America). Shortly after high school, she met the love of her life; they married in 1956. That little girl from small-town America had quite the journey, calling several countries, states, and cities her home: Venezuela S.A., Wichita Falls TX, Denver CO, Shreveport LA, her beloved Norman OK, and finally Horseshoe Bay TX.
Jan was active in numerous groups and associations including ladies golf, bridge, church, choir, and W.O.W. (Women of the World program). She was also an exceptional homemaker - according to all who were fortunate enough to taste her baking, she was the best cook around. Holidays were her favorite time of year, and she made sure each Christmas was full of delicious smells, beautiful decorations, and gifts in the form of unforgettable memories. Family was always the center of Jan's life, and "Meme" was her favorite title. She loved all 28 years of it. Hosting sleepovers, cooking parties, trips to Walmart and spending hours at the pool with her grandchildren brought her the greatest joy of all. Football weekends with her shouts of "Boomer Sooner!" and family get-togethers created a lifetime of wonderful memories, both for herself and the family by her side.

Donation in Lieu of flowers can be made to the American Alzheimer's Association in her name.
Memorial Services will be held on January 26th at 11:30 a.m. at The Church of Horseshoe Bay, Horseshoe Bay, TX 78657

A true Lady in every sense of the word. A family lady from her grandparents all the way to grandkids. Everyone that came in contact with Jan and Tommy are better off for it.

Jan was my life-long friend. For me, losing Jan is like losing my sister. She was a spectacular girl who grew up to be a very special and wonderful woman. May you rest in peace, my dear Friend.
