Swartz Funeral Home - Flint Obituary

BURGESS, Jan Elise, age 73, passed away Thursday, February 12, 2026 in Burton, MI.

A long-time Flint area resident and social worker, Jan’s career was dedicated to helping others at the Genesee County Health Department, Jail, and Circuit Court. Outside of her work life, Jan was a talented artist and all-around beautiful soul.

She is survived by her best friend and husband, Kearby;

beloved son Jon (Beverly) North and granddaughter Athena;

daughter Sherry (David) Mockles, granddaughter Kristyn, great-grands Theia, Mia and Enzo;

and her sweet pugs Bob, Ed, Arnold, and Lucy.

Jan brought light, honesty, and humor to every room she entered– and we are all better for having known her. She will be profoundly missed by her family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, and the many online communities of which she was a part.

Per Jan’s wishes, no service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to LaVigne Home for Compassionate Care, The Foundation Fighting Blindness, or the Michigan Pug Rescue, “Pug Love”.

Not sure what to say?

i never met her in person, only online..but she was amazing! She will be profoundly missed.{Beverly's mom}

I met Jan about 40 years ago at the health dept. She never met a stranger. Jan was a believer in God and wasn't shame to admit it. I am sadden to hear this but know we will meet again in glory. MY prayers are with the family.

Kearby, sorry for your loss. May she rest in piece.

My deepest sympathies to Jan's...or as I knew her, Ellie's...family. Ellie was my childhood friend. We grew up living across the street from each other in Manley Village in Flint, MI. We played together every day. We also lived next door to each other when our families moved to Flushing, MI. As the years passed, we went our separate ways, but I always remember our sweet friendship with fondness and love. To her husband and children, you lost a wonderful wife and mother. To Betty, her...

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

You were a kind soul. May you have forever peace.

Ellie was my sister and I loved her. I'll miss her smile and l laughter. Yet those things will always be there in my heart. Your out of pain now Fly, rest easy.

Jan & Rosebud

Jan was a very special person - kind, caring & thoughtful. She was also humorous, intelligent & artistic. She will be missed & thought of often. Rosebud was her favorite alpaca to visit & made a special connection with her as she did with so many people ❤

Kearby, my prayers are with you my friend. I to this day think about how much I miss you and Jan as my neighbors. Two of my most favorite people. Jan was such a beautiful soul, loved our conversations. We sure did laugh a lot. She will surely be missed.
