I was fortunate to reconnect with Jan this spring after losing touch for 20-some years. It was as if we'd never missed a beat! Our conversations were always full of Jan's laughter and wit and enlivened by Jan's thoughtful insights on issues large and small. My sympathies to Ellen and Jan's family and friends how luck we all were to have known such a great spirit!

Can it really be 48 years since we first met Jan when he was 19? He came into our lives the same way he left -- such an energetic presence. He was at the same time one of the most hilarious storytellers ever and a serious, thoughtful and intelligent commentator on our time and our world. He will always be in our memories, and Ellen -- you are in our hearts.

I met you at 17 in Ann Arbor and was lucky to live near you in Philly, Jan. Your sense of right and wrong and spiritual goodness guided me. You were pure love, brother.

Jan, We will miss your quick / sharp wit, your booming voice, and the passion for which you approached everything you did. We are grateful to have shared so many happy times with you and Ellen at the Phillies games ... especially the 2008 World Series! Thank you for allowing us to be part of your life.

I feel like I only got to know Jan in the last few years and wish I got to know him over the many years he and Ellen have been together. I will never forget that Jan was a fun and funny guy, a dual combination of character and charisma. Jan will be remembered always, and forever missed by all. May his memory be a blessing.

Jan you definitely gave us a lot of laughs though the years. We always enjoying listening to you because we never knew what you were going to say next! We can remember you all the way back to your wedding. The two of you were just meant for each other. You certainly were the life of the party and you will be missed by anyone whoever met you.

Jan had a strong yet affable personality; he exuded confidence but still made those around him feel comfortable. I enjoyed celebrating holidays and special moments with him. I'm grateful for the times we shared together. He will be missed. May his memory warm your heart and make you smile.
