Jane Carnes Obituary

Jane Miravalle Carnes
September 19, 1948 - January 15, 2022
Charlotte, North Carolina - Jane Miravalle Carnes, also known as "Walking Jane" by her neighbors, passed away peacefully Saturday, January 15, 2022 at Novant Presbyterian Medical Center, Charlotte. She was born September 19, 1948 in Raleigh, NC to Elizabeth (Lib) Foster Miravalle and John Husman Miravalle. Jane grew up in Raleigh and graduated from Broughton High School. She attended Methodist College in Fayetteville, NC.
After working in Raleigh and Richmond for a couple of years, Jane moved to Charlotte, where she met the love of her life, Dahl Carnes. Together they built a successful business, Selwyn Jewelers. Jane and Dahl always loved the beach and for over 45 years they vacationed regularly at Holden Beach and also often traveled to the Bahamas and Aruba.
Jane was very active in the Junior League of Charlotte where she made many lifelong friends. While volunteering with the Junior League, Jane became interested in issues important to seniors. She chaired the first Craft Fair for 300 seniors who displayed and sold their hand-made crafts. She supported the Charlotte Mecklenburg Senior Center by serving on committees and organizing fundraisers. She chaired golf tournaments, Sunday for Seniors Walks, silent auctions, award dinners, and more. She became President of the Board of Directors of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Senior Centers, where she helped develop programs and services to enrich the lives of seniors in Charlotte.
In the 90's, Jane began walking in her neighborhood to help heal a back problem. Starting with cans of soup in her hands, she walked in her home, then in the parking lot of her townhome, then on neighborhood streets carrying weights. She worked up to walking 15 miles a day in 3 walks, which she continued for many years. In the process, she met most of her neighbors who became friends, and earned the nickname "Walking Jane". She had a big heart and was always finding ways to help others. She was loved and celebrated by many.
Jane is survived by her husband, Dahl Thomas Carnes of Charlotte, NC; sister, Lisa F. Miravalle of Henderson, NC; son, Michael T. Carnes and his wife, Leigh and their children, Josh and Sophie of Allen, Texas: and stepson, Dahl T. Carnes, Jr. and his wife, Shirley of Mt. Pleasant, NC.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Jane's life will be held Thursday, January 20th at 2:00 pm at McEwen Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, followed by a reception at the conclusion of the service.
