Jane Ann Child, wife, mother and most terrific friend died unexpectedly Monday, August 6 at Memorial Hermann Hospital surrounded by family and friends. Jane was born June 19, 1955 in Brooklyn, NY to Thomas and Bernadette Haas Child and spent her formative years at the corner of Castro and Market in San Francisco and was a star at Mercy High School. She moved to Houston in 1974, graduated from Memorial Senior High School, played Division I volleyball at Southwest Texas State University, and was the first Radio, Television and Film graduate at Texas A&M University. She made a career in advertising, where her intelligent imagination won her clients, friends and awards.
Jane is survived by her husband of 33 years, Jim Echols, and beloved daughters Maddy and Hannah. Also by her mother, Betty Child; brother Christopher and Kathi Child, sons Peter and Kit; brother Charlie and Marylen Child, daughters Sloane, Darcy and Riley; and brother Tommy. Jane's lightning-fast wit, irreverent humor and heartfelt laugh will be, missed by all who knew her. She was a raconteur unlike any other, a wonderful tangle of compassion and creativity.
A wake will be held on Thursday, August 9, 5-8 PM in the Southside Clubhouse, 3743 Garnet St, Houston 77005. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 AM, August 10 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 9900 Stella Link, Houston 77025. Dear Jim, Maddy and Hannah,
We were away and just returned to hear this heartwrenching news. When I think of your family I think of a team. Your family worked hard, played hard and loved deeply. The connections between you were felt by those around you. I will not even entertain the idea that her love is anywhere but surrounding the three of you and her extended family!

I grew up with Jane at Eureka Valley playground and we became very good friends. We played basketball with Claire Anderson on Saturdays and had so much fun. I just want to tell her kids that your mom was a very very special friend and I always loved her. Until we meet again Jane Rest In Peace-----Ronnie Barrett

Oh Jane...you burned so bright for so long. Heaven must have needed some creative inspiration.

I was fortunate enough to work with Jane almost daily for a couple of years in the 90's when she worked at Julie Ray Creative. We were instant buds. Beyond her creativity, there was a confidence and wit that was enviable.

My condolences to Jim, your sweet Mom, the girls, Tommy. I am going to miss you but will hold close the fond memories ...always.

I was so very sad to hear of the loss of Jane. Jane and I were classmates at Most Holy Redeemer in San Francisco. I wasn't able to attend our 40th reunion, but I always remember her infectious smile and warm and friendly personality. It will be forever in my heart. I see from the recent photo her wonderful smile. My thoughts and prayers are with all of her family. She was too young.

It is with great sadness that I received the news today about Jane. It was my privilege to have her as my next door neighbor when her family moved to Houston in 1974. Jane was immediately a hit with my family. I so enjoyed her great humor and thoughtfulness. We conversed over many games of ping pong in her garage (a great memory even though she was so good she beat me every time).

Betty, please know that Deb and I are keeping you in our hearts and our prayers. To Jim and the girls, and to Chris, Charlie and Tommy, our deepest sympathies to you all. I feel so fortunate to have had Jane as a friend and neighbor.

Jane and I went to Most Holy Reedemer in San Francisco. I am so very sad to hear this news, and my heart goes out to her family. She spoke so lovingly and proudly of her girls and her husband at the 40-year reunion. She couldn't say enough good things about her life, her loving husband and her vivacious girls. She seemed so happy and at peace with her life. I'm sure the world won't be the same place without her, and the family is in my prayers in this difficult time.

I remeber her hair and that unmistakeable smile. She had a dry humor and sharp wit that I never appreciated those things while growing up with her. I was forunate enough to meet her and chat with her again for our 40th MHR reunion. How I took that meeting for granted...like we would all live forever... Please God, take this child into your loving arms an embrace her. She will be missed here, but she is in a better place by your side.
