He played football and ran track, setting school records while being co-captain of the track team. He also excelled in snow skiing in Vermont. His thoughts turned toward the religious life and he entered the seminary at Darlington, N.J., in 1961, staying through 1966. Following teaching at Saddle River Country Day School, he entered the U.S. Army, and after completing Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga., he was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant on May 19, 1969. An active member of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle Church, he served for many years as a lector, Eucharistic minister, cantor and member of the scola. Not sure what to say?

It is hard to believe almost a year has passed. Jan is missed and remembered every day. No one can fill the hole of his loss but I pray the love of family and friends can ease the pain. We love you. ~Chris

To the Skutnik Family,

I just learned of Jan's passing and am saddened by the loss of a wonderful person. I had the pleasure of singing with Jan for several years at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Newark. He was always one of my favorite people because of his kindness, wit, sense of humor and spirit. He will be missed and remembered by all.

Dearest Mrs. Skutnik,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I did not know your husband as well, but I can only imagine how wonderful a person he must have been, to be with someone as warm and sincere as yourself and those in your family. I send my most sincere regards to you during this difficult time. I know you will soon find peace.

Dear Mary-Jo and family,
I just learned of Jan's death and am deeply saddened for your loss. It was always a pleasure to have him in our company. He is with the LORD and at peace. May God bless you and carry you thru this difficult time.
Love, Donna Wojciechowski and family

Mary Jo: I am thinking of you and your loss of both father and husband. If I could wrap my arms around you from Seattle I would. My children and I will keep you in our hearts. Love, Maggie Bissell & family

To The Family of Jan:

My deepest sympathy to each of you. Reading the Taps for Jan brought sadness for his loss and fond memories of our long ago service together. One is never prepared to learn of the death of a friend. I regret that I did not know Jan as well as many others did, but my memories are good memories. As a child of God, he gave so much here on earth. He has now joined our Lord and continues his service in Heaven. Please be assured, Jan will be with you always,...

To the Skutnik Family:
My deepest sympathies to you on your loss. As a fellow classmate at Pope Pius we could never have known that a high school reunion would bring us together for a couple opportunities to play golf and share family stories. Jan, always the gentleman never tired of helping me find lost balls. He projected a spirit, love of family, faith and country in everything he did. He is missed.

When I come to the end of the road and the sun has set for me,I want no rites in a gloom filled room. Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little but not too long and not with your head bowed low. Remember the love that we one shared. Miss me, but let me go.This journey we all must take, each must go alone. It's all a part of the master's plan, a step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick of heart, go to the friends we know. Bury your sorrows in doing good deads. Miss me,...

God Bless Mr. Skutnik and Family. My family sends their regrets and you are in our thoughts and prayers. Rest in Peace.
