CARTER, Janet Ewell, 72, born June 7, 1940, the only child of Franklin and Helen Davis Ewell (deceased) in Hopkins (Hunting Creek, Va.). She put up a valiant and courageous fight against cancer, and crossed over the river Jordan on June 28, 2012. Janet is survived by her husband of 49 years, Donald G. Carter of Mechanicsville; son, Scott G. Carter and wife, Jessica; and new granddaughter, Brett Ashley Carter, all of Chicago, Ill.; daughter, Julie E. Carter and husband, Samuel; and grandson Jordan A. Carter, all also of Mechanicsville, who loved his "Maga." She lovingly called him "Monkeyface."
She was remembered for her wit at Parksley High School, where she graduated in 1958, going on to Stuart Circle Hospital in Richmond, Va., earning an R.N. degree in 1961. She worked at the hospital until her children were born and stayed home until the children were teenagers. She then went to Pamunkey Regional Library, part time, and worked 22 years, retiring in 2008 as manager of the technical services department. She was a strong supporter of Don in his construction mission projects at home and around the world. When the group started to go to Tylerton, Md. (Smith Island) in the bay, she said she had to go as an interpreter, since she talked the bay language. She and others with cancer gave a program on things to expect and things that can change when you have cancer. She had many lifelong friends on these trips. People from Costa Rica to Maine had her on their prayer list. The family wishes to express their thanks to Dr. Lee, Dr. Shani, Dr. Schwartz, Susan Webb and the staff of Hospice of Virginia. Her caregivers included Teresa, Debra, Bonnie, Barbara, Gail, Laurie and Dawn. Also thank you for all the kind words, support, prayers and food from all our friends. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, July 2, 2012. Interment Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please send gifts to the PARTNERSHIP MISSION FUND at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 11342 Hillcrest Rd., Mechanicsville, Va. 23116, which will be used to help others.
