KANE, Janet E., 72, of The Villages, Fla., formerly of Richmond, Va., passed away on November 16, 2008. She is survived by two sons, Peter Kane and his fianc‚e, Scott Warren; Kenny Kane and his wife, Jeannie; two grandchildren, Dylan and Bailey; all of Richmond, Va.; and brother, Neil Empie of Summerfield, Fla. She was retired from Janet Kane Interiors Inc. and the State of Virginia. Janet had an intense passion for her profession in Interior Design. She served as the American Society of Interior Designers Virginia Chapter President from 1978-1980 and 1986-1988. The honor of Fellow, the highest honor awarded to an ASID member, was bestowed upon her in 1987. In 1990, she received the Designer of Distinction Award. In 2004, the Janet Kane Spirit Award was established in her honor, recognizing promising leadership and dedication within the profession. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held 11 a.m., Friday, December 5 at Salisbury Presbyterian Church, 13621 W. Salisbury Rd., Midlothian. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, she requested memorial contributions be made to the Janet Kane Spirit Award, c/o ASID Virginia Chapter, 2019 Bloomfield Avenue, Roanoke, Va. 24012. I can not think about Janet without smiling. She was truly a "one of a kind" and although we will miss seeing her I know how fully she lived her life. The expression comes to mind - an old one - Janet was a "great dame"!! Enjoy that great golf course in heaven - you will beat them all hands down

My prayers are with your family at this time of loss, but be comforted in knowing how many lives Janet touched in her brief encounter here on earth. She was a wonderful person to know and work with. I also had the honor of knowing her and working with her on one of the ASID Designer houses and several VCU student chapter related projects.

I'm not the only person to write about how Janet was a wonderful mentor. When I started my business in 1980, it was to Janet that I went for advice, which she happily gave though I was a potential competitor. Through ASID we came to know each other well, and as I followed her in leadership of the Va. Chapter, we traveled to a couple of conferences together. I will always remember Janet fondly as a great leader and mentor. I appreciate the ability to learn from her years of experience at a time when my career was just beginning.
