James A. McAlister Funerals & Cremation Obituary

Janice Stinson Conklin (Jan) entered into eternal rest on July 20, 2020. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Jan was born on May 18, 1929, in Atlanta, GA, daughter of the late James William Stinson and the late Mary Ruth Griffin Stinson. Jan graduated from Girls High School in Atlanta in 1947 and afterwards attended night school at the University of Georgia Atlanta Division. She met her future husband Otis Roscoe Conklin on a blind date, while he was teaching at Georgia Tech. They moved back to Charleston where she helped him run the family clothing store Conklins while raising three daughters. In addition to being a homemaker, Jan also volunteered at the Gibbs Art Gallery and Old Saint Andrews Episcopal Church. Her second career began in the office of Senator Fritz Hollings in 1982. She had a successful career as a staff assistant secretary in the Charleston Office for 21 years before retiring. After she and Otis moved to James Island, they began attending St. James Episcopal Church and Jan volunteered at the James Island Senior Center where she met many wonderful friends.

Jan was preceded in death by her husband Otis, her brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles (Thelma), Clyde (Jonnie), Jack (Gladys) and James (Pat).

She is survived by her three daughters, Margaret Suzanne (Suzy) Hayden, Mary Rhett Conklin, and Cheryl Jan Fuller; her grandchildren, Anna Rhett Miller (Robert), Alexander (Alec) Cobb (Julie), David Bird (Jamie), Griffin Bird (Nikki), Edward Bird (Ashley) and Michael Fuller. She also leaves behind 5 beautiful great-grandchildren, Leyton, Logan, Noah, Davey and Mason, and her beloved nieces and nephews, Pamela Stinson, Leslie and James Watkins, Andy and Beth Stinson, Mark and Tracy Stinson and Kirk and Lori Stinson.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Saint James Anglican Church, 1872 Camp Road, Charleston, SC 29412.

Not sure what to say?

Jan was one of the first woman I met after moving to Charleston. While attending WW meetings, she was always so friendly and gracious. Did I forget to say funny, too?

After moving to James Island, I ran into her at the Lowcountry Senior Center and in time, we became friends. There were four of us who would go out at times for lunch, some movies and dinners and even a few trips to the NC mountains. We always had fun!

To me, Jan was the epitome of a lady; she was kind,...

Deepest sympathy to Jan and Otis’s daughters and their families. It’s never easy saying the final goodbye.
Remembering the Conklin family from Council Street days,

Dear Suzy, Rhett and Cheryl,

I was so sorry to read of your mom's passing. I can imagine how sad you must feel. I have been thinking of you these last couple of days and hoping you are ok. I remember your mom well. I remember her friendliness, her big smile and her hearty laugh. She was fun to be around. Your mom was a beautiful lady and her legacy lives on in her lovely daughters.

Wishing you peace and comfort,

Carol

It was a pleasure to know Jan. I have the fondest memories of her at the Lowcountry Senior Center. She volunteered for several years and was an active participant. I will forever remember her smile and kind nature. Jan left a long lasting imprint on my heart. My sympathies to the family. Aleshia

Dearest Suzy,

Our thoughts, memories and love of your most wonderful Mother will never be forgotten. At times between you and Richard being basically Grand Parents to our Sons, she was like a Great Grand Mom to them as well and we all loved her, so sweet. We love you dearly and your Sisters as well for we have had many a good times over the years that we cherish and hope will continue. Mom is in a better place, free from personal pain and the crazy world we live in, what a peace...

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Jan was such a beautiful person. She worked for my dad in Fritz’s office. We actually have 2 large pictures Otis did for my parents! So sad for your family, “To be absent from the body , is to be present with the Lord” Corinthians 5:8. My dad was Joe Maupin, you may have met him. Thoughts and prayers, Beth and Bruce McMurray

I first met Janice when began working at Conklin's in the late 1960's. Both she and Otis were wonderful to work with and they continued to be just as nice as the years passed and I would see them at church, shopping and later, Jan, at the Senior Center. She always had a smile and asked about my kids. How ironic, but I attended a grave side service the first of July at Bethany and I looked over to the headstone I was standing by and it was your Dad. I smiled as a flood of memories came...

Deepest sympathy for the family of this beautiful lady. I worked at the Custom House with her while she working for Senator Hollings. I rescued her from being stuck in the elevator once. Mrs. Jan was a beautiful, sweet caring lady.
