Sister Janice Jackson Snjm

Sister Janice remains in my heart as one of my favorite teachers. I was in her 8th grade class at St. Vincent DePaul School in Salem. I had the good fortune of tracking her down and visiting when she was in Eugene, Oregon. It was a memorable day. Even after 40 years, she remembered me and her kindness then, and my memory of it now, truly brightens my days.

Sister Janice was a pioneer. In the 1980's she was living in Eugene and took the initiative to start a re-entry program for men coming back into the community after serving time. Her colleague in this initiative was Sister Evelyn, plus the volunteers that they recruited.
The program was and is called Sponsors, and from a modest but determined beginnings it's now a very successful program that serves men and women, and activley works on housing as well as jobs and rehabilitation. Sister...

I met Sister Janice in 1975, and was impressed by her sincere compassion for others and selfless generosity. She was an amazing and inspiring human being and the world is a little less bright without her.
