HOUSTON (AP) — NASA astronaut Janice Voss, who first worked for the space agency as a teenager and flew five shuttle missions in seven years, has died. She was 55.
The agency said in a statement Tuesday that Voss died overnight after a battle with cancer.
A native of South Bend, Indiana, Voss started with NASA while attending Purdue University in 1973. She later worked as an instructor before being selected as an astronaut in 1990.
Voss flew four missions in the 1990s before a flight to the International Space Station in 2000. Her final trip was part of a radar topography mission that mapped more than 47 million square miles (120 million square kilometers) of Earth's surface.
NASA says Voss was one of six women to fly in space at least five times.

I was sad and stunned to learn of Dr. Janice Voss's passing after watching the Smithsonian's TV presentation of Space Earth. She was a bright star, brief, will be missed, also made sure new "stars" may attain their dreams! Nobody will replace a Janice Voss, a super great human being!

My condolences to the Family and colleagues of Janice Voss. When Janice was first admitted to Purdue, she wrote about getting for credit for calculus courses she had already studied. As Associate of the School of Science, I wrote that she should have her college forward a transcript. She replied that she had not studied these in a college; rather her father had tutored her in them. I told her we had tests she could use to establish the credit. She completed the exams and established credit...

My condolences go out to Dr. Voss's family. I was her space suit technician for STS-99. I was honored to serve her, I am saddened by her loss, but I find comfort in knowing she contributed a lot to our world while she was with us. J.R. Medina (Houston, TX)
