Not sure what to say?

Jay was a good friend at Hotchkiss and we stayed in touch for several years thereafter. He was a man of strong passions - he rarely did things half-way! More than almost anyone I've known, he lived a life across very different worlds - from the sometimes rough and tumble world of his family's cement block business near Poughkeepsie through the academically and socially challenging world of boarding school, to the place where it sounds like he found his greatest comfort - Southeast Harbor. ...

Condolences and prayers go out to Jay's family.

Jay and I were four-year classmates at Hotchkiss. When we were lower-mids, he gave me three Grateful Dead albums in order to prove to me that they weren't as awful as I thought. The effect of that gift would be difficult to exaggerate. After my conversion, I associated with Dead heads exclusively for the next five or six years. I met my future wife after a Jerry Garcia concert. I don't think I saw Jay more than once or twice after graduation- we live in Maryland- but whenever I hear "St...

Jackie, Alexander and Elizabeth-it is with great heartache that we learn about Jay's passing. Jay's short time on earth proves that one person can leave an impact on so many people--one which you should all be very proud as you were all part of it. You are a wonderful and very strong family unit. Always remember the things that made Jay special and who he was to so many people, but a husband and father first. Keep his smile etched in your minds and memories in your hearts. Our love,...

Sounds like Jay led a full life with fun, creativity and purpose since our days at Hotchkiss. My heart goes out to him and his family.

It is with sadness that I offer my condolences to Jackie and the children. Even though I am just one of the guys that fueled the airplane in Bar Harbor, Jay always had a smile and an encouraging word for me. I always smiled when I looked at the screen and saw that Jay and family were inbound to KBHB. I will miss him.

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the entire Montfort Family.

I was surprised and sorry to hear that Jay had passed away. To say we dated when we were at Hotchkiss would be an exaggeration, but we were both on the swim team and did get to know each other a bit the first few months of our sophomore year. It was with interest, joy and sadness that I read his lovingly written obituary, and I realized once again how much people change and grow after high school. I'm glad he had a successful life in so many respects and enjoyed it with good friends and...
