Dear Jay,
The first spring that I was in Olympia, I was invited to march with Planet Percussion in the Procession of the Species. WOW, I was blown away by your energy and focus. Later, I had a daughter, who needed a wheelchair to get around. She was also drawn to your super powers with music and to your warm acceptance, and she always wanted to march next to "Jay's Drummers" in the Procession. She passed away last year, and I dearly hope that she greeted you with an extra drum under...

On the day of your memorial, I've been thinking of you, Jay, and how many people you touched thru Planet Percussion and the Procession-- with those of us who (learned to) perform rhythms in so many hues and colors, and with those who enjoyed and also participated as audiences... Jay, you truly did listen to your own beat... and shared with others, and taught many of us the total joy of percussion with colorful costumes and so many different instruments--some melodic, some haunting, some...

Jay was such a bright, vibrant key player in our Olympia community. He literally touched hundreds of students lives every year in our work together. He blessed us with his energy, enthusiasm and commitment for many years and will be sorely missed. Hope our Olympia community will gather to honor him.

I am remembering that little boy arriving from India and coming to my 1st grade class. You were so energetic and had all the self-confidence you needed in this new and exciting life you were introduced to. You will be greatly missed, Jay. You touched so many lives in so many ways.

When I first met Jay, he invited my grandson, Tyler, and I to play with the Planet Percussion Band in the Procession of the Species, just as he had invited, inspired, challenged, and mentored probably hundreds of people to particpate in the Procession and the Band. That year my granddaughter Candace, and grandsons Colin and Christian also particpated with Planet Percussion and the Procession in tropical bird head dresses and batiked costumes.
During the Procession, the first...
