Jay Truppo

AGE: 90 • Lavallette

Jay Truppo, 90, of Lavallette, NJ, went peacefully home into Jesus' loving arms on March 6, 2016 at Jersey Shore Hospital. Born in East Orange, NJ, on June 29, 1925, his first big trip away from home was with the Navy, where he became a radioman and gunner on a B24 that was part of Bombing Squadron 123. Jay flew many missions during WWII out of Okinawa in the Pacific Theater. After being shot at so many times during the war, Jay had no desire to get back in a plane. Vacations were always by car. Finally, in 1982, 37 years after his last military flight, he flew by jet, with his wife, to vacation in Hawaii. After the war Jay returned home and married Caroline Giglio. They lived on Telford Street in Newark (affectionately called Truppo Street since 11 families of Truppos lived there) where they raised their son, Jay, and daughter, Debra. Jay worked for NJ Bell, ATT, and Lucent Technologies for 39 years. In later years Jay and Carol moved to Maplewood, and then to the Jersey Shore. Jay was the baby in his family, and, also the last surviving of his generation of Truppos. Although he had hobbies that he loved, top of the list the Yankees, he always made time to chauffer sick family members to doctors and family events. His quiet, loving kindness was an example to his children and grandchildren who learned from him that being a leader of your family meant being a servant. Jay was still driving until he was 90 years and 3 months old. The secret to Jay's long life- sausage and eggs for breakfast, Costco hot dog for lunch("$1.50 and they even give me unlimited soda"), red meat and potatoes for dinner(please, nothing green on his plate), butter pecan ice cream for dessert, and at least one good cigar a day.

Jay was predeceased by his parents, Gus Truppo and Rose Loprete Truppo, his brothers, Michael Truppo and Frank Truppo, and his wife of 68 years Caroline Giglio Truppo, and many uncles, aunts, and cousins. Jay is survived by his son Jay and his wife Grace, his daughter Debra Truppo Thomson and her husband David, his grandchildren Jeffrey Truppo and wife Colleen, Matthew Truppo and wife Olivia, Danielle Truppo Colbert and husband Chris, Shawn Truppo and wife Hilary, and great grandchildren Owen, Lawrence, Liam, George, Elizabeth, and Selah.

Visitation will be from 4pm until 8pm at Buckley Funeral Home, 509 Second Avenue, Asbury Park on Wednesday, March 9. A celebration service of Jay's life will be at Community Bible Church in Neptune, NJ, on Thursday, March 10 at 10 am . Jay will be laid to rest next to his wife at Hollywood Cemetery in Union, NJ. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.Buckleyfuneralhome.net.

Not sure what to say?

Jay was my boss at New Jersey Bell in 1970 and we worked together for many years. My wife Rebecca knew Jays wife from her dating Joe Gamberoni at Irvington High. May my old friend and co-worker rest in peace. Our sincere condolences to his family.

So many childhood memories with this second Dad!! Trips to Lavallette at midnight after picking Carol up from work. I learned to eat lobster with Jay in Atlantic City. What about the time we all slept on the floor next to his bed on his birthday weekend because we heard a noise. He never heard us but was startled when he woke up to find us in his bedroom. I'm only sorry he didn't get a few more seasons there. He will be missed by everyone especially all of you his treasured family....

My sincere sympathies to you Debra and your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time, you will always have a special guardian angel watching over you and may God Bless and keep you in his care.

Paula and Allan send our condolences. Jay lived a long and fruitful life. Wish we could be there, but we are in Fla. until mid April.

Jay/Debra
I only met your Dad once in Lavallette when visiting with your cousin Frank.
It took only once to know he was gregarious and a great guy all around. One could tell he was generous and very accepting of family and friends and their friends. I am sure you will miss him dearly. I like to offer my sincere condolences and may he rest in peace.
Sincerely,
Fausto Miraglia ( Frankies Buddy)
