June 4, 1925 - April 16, 2024

Raleigh, North Carolina - Jean Norwood Anderson died Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

She was born in Raleigh, NC, June 4, 1925 to Helen Allen and George McIntosh Norwood. Jean attended Raleigh public schools graduating from Broughton High School Class of 1943, after which attending Salem College and Abbot Art School in Washington D.C. She married high school classmate, Frank Anderson Jr., in June 1946. They began raising their family while maintaining an active social and civic life in Raleigh.

Jean was an active member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church where she was involved in Sunday School, United Methodist Women, Hugh Isley Sunday School and Altar Guild. Her interest in art led her to become a docent and life member of the NC Museum of Art. She pursued her hobby of painting in her home studio. She also enjoyed her bridge club, book club, garden club, and tennis group.

Jean was predeceased by her husband, her daughter, Julie Holderness, and her three beloved brothers, Mac, Charles and Joe Norwood. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Thornhill (George), son, George Anderson (Katherine) and son-in-law, Richard Holderness; grandchildren, Tad and Cooper Thornhill, Hilary Ferrel, Anne Avera, Julie Shaw, Richard Thurston, Austen, and Anderson Holderness; Emily Payne and Caroline Birckhead, fourteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Jean was one of the last of her generation of twenty two Norwood first cousins with whom she was particularly close.

Jean spent the majority of her time enjoying her children and grandchildren and supporting Frank in his many activities. Many years were spent traveling as part of his role as director and president of the National Automobile Dealers Assoc. Relaxing times were spent at Lake Gaston and later Atlantic Beach.

The family wishes to thank Lekitacare and her caregivers especially Virginia, Penny, and Esther for the loving care and attention given to Jean for over a decade.

A private family graveside service was held at Historic Oakwood Cemetery.
