CHICOPEE – Jean A. (Fagnand) Dowd, 89, passed away on Friday, May 31, 2019 in Baystate Medical Center with her family by her side.  Born in Easthampton on August 23, 1929, the daughter of the late Leon N. and Alice E. (O’Connor) Fagnand, she was raised there and graduated from St. Michael’s High School, Northampton.  She moved to Chicopee as she began her life as the wife of Edmund F. Dowd, Sr.  Together they settled in Chicopee Falls and were faithful communicants of St. Patrick’s Church. There they began their family; daughter, Mary Ellen Hurst; two sons, Edmund F. Dowd Jr. and Daniel M. Dowd and his wife Debbie, all of Chicopee.  They were blessed with 5 grandchildren, Patrick Hurst and his wife Kaitlyn, Meghan Murca and her husband Tom, Kerry Bouchard and her husband Marcus, Amanda Dowd and her fiancé Alexis Sepulvida and Daniel Dowd, Jr.; nine great grandchildren, Jacob, Vivian, Ella, Declan, Julia, Ryan, Alexis, Addyson, Amelia, with the arrival of the tenth expected in July.  Jean also is survived by her sister-in-law, Elodie Fagnand of Easthampton.  During her working years, Jean very proudly served as a secretary in the Athletics Department at Springfield College for 25 years.  Besides her husband of 61 years, retired Chicopee Police Chief Edmund F. Dowd, Sr., who passed away on May 17, 2017, she was also predeceased by her son-in-law, James G. Hurst and two brothers, James A. Fagnand and David J. Fagnand.  The funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2018 beginning at the Corridan Funeral Home, 333 Springfield St., Chicopee at 8:45 a.m. with the Funeral Mass at 10 in Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut St., Springfield.  The burial will follow the mass in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Chicopee Falls.  Calling hours will be held on Monday, June 3, 2019 in the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m.  Contributions in memory of Jean may be directed to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 577 Carew St., Springfield, MA, 01104.  For online condolences, please visit www.corridanfuneral.com.

Mary Ellen, Eddie and Danny, I extend my sincere condolences. I have fond memories going on vacation with your family at Hampton Beach, the occasional picnics and just stopping buy your home as a kid. Your mom was a sweet and fun loving person.

Danny I am so very sorry for the loss of your mom she was a very sweet lady although I haven't seen her in sometime I had good memories of her at St Patrick's church and I would always talk to her when I would go cut my aunt's lawn. My family's prayers will be with you .

My condolences go out to the Dowd family. Patrick I am sorry to hear about the passing of your grandmother, and Danny the loss of your mother. She was not only a devoted catholic but a great woman.
