LUGAR, Jean Elizabeth
Hatton, age 89, on April 24, 2012, departed this life into eternal rest in Powder Springs, Ga., where she lived with her son, Billy, and his loving family. Jean was born in Baltimore, Md., on August 27, 1922 to George and Mary Hatton. Her family moved to Richmond, Va., when she was eight years old, where she spent the rest of her childhood and most of her adult life. There, she raised a family with her husband, William A. Lugar Sr., and was an active member of Saint Matthew's Episcopal Church. In the late 1960s, she began a career in banking and became the first female employee without a college degree to be promoted to a loan officer position for First and Merchants Bank. She was an active volunteer for Meals on Wheels and a Docent at the Governor's Mansion in Richmond. When she left Richmond in 2010 to live near her daughter, Sherry, she resided in Mount Pleasant, S.C., before heading to Powder Springs, Ga., last year. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two sisters, Virginia (Dinda) Hatton Hock and Mary George Hatton; and her former husband, William A. Lugar Sr. Jean is survived by her four loving children, Susan Lugar Morgan and husband, Tom, Sherry Lugar Coish and her husband, Ron, Billy Lugar and his wife, Julie, and Mike Lugar and his wife, Marion. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who all loved her dearly. Jean's greatest passion in life was her family and she loved each and every one of them unconditionally. She once wrote that her children were her immortality and her finest accomplishments. She also took great pleasure from playing Bridge, her many clubs, walking, gardening and her many friends. Even as she battled the debilitating symptoms of Alzheimer's, Jean was always able to keep her beautiful sense of humor, her lovely smile and her positive outlook on life. Services will be held at
2 p.m. May 26, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Richmond, Va., where her ashes will be spread on their memorial garden. In lieu of flowers, the children of Jean have requested a donation be made toward research for victims of Alzheimer's disease.
