Jeanette Delores Swenson

Jeanette (Delores) Swenson, age 82, of Ocheyedan, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at the Country View Manor in Sibley, Iowa. Funeral Services will be Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 1:30 P.M. at the United Methodist Church in Ocheyedan, Iowa. Rev. Shannon Pascual officiating. Burial to follow at Ocheyedan Township Cemetery in Ocheyedan. Visitation will be Friday, January 30, from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Chapel in Ocheyedan. Jeanette Delores "Dee" (Hughes) Swenson was born on May 5th, 1932 at Whiting, Iowa to Elias Eugene and Rosa Leona (Johnson) Hughes. In her youth she set pins in the bowling alley and worked in the local café for four years. She attended grade school and high school at Whiting Community School and graduated in 1950. She attended Morningside College in Sioux City and earned her teaching degree in Elementary Education in June of 1952. While she was attending college she lived and worked in the Wiley Mayne home taking care of the children and cleaning house. She also worked for the Recreation Department in Sioux City. After attending college she moved to Ocheyedan, Iowa to teach in the Ocheyedan Community School as an elementary teacher. She taught two years from 1952-54. On June 28th, 1953 she was united in marriage to Arlyn Glen Swenson of Ocheyedan where they lived on a farm south of Ocheyedan until August of 1982. There they had three boys: Steven Glen, Philip Ryan and Keith Arlyn. After moving to Ocheyedan they operated Swenson's Service Station until their retirement on May 1st, 1997. At the station Delores did the book work, pumped gas and ran a small floral shop. Music was always a big part of her life and in 1967 she joined a country western band called "We and Dee". In 1968 she joined another country western band called "The Fortunes" where she performed until 1980. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and followed them with interest with their music and sports. She was an avid bowler, bowling in the Ladies League, Mixed Doubles League and tournaments. She was a member of the Ocheyedan United Methodist Church where she was a high school youth leader, Sunday school teacher and sang many times at church. She moved into Country View Manor in Sibley in 2012 where she resided until her death on January 28th, 2015. Those left to cherish her memories are: her husband, Arlyn Swenson of Sibley; her three sons, Steven (Lisa) Swenson of Ocheyedan, Philip (Lynelle) Swenson of Ocheyedan and Keith (Julie) Swenson of Sibley; 11 grandchildren, Amanda (Matt) Travaille, Christina (Joe) Schwartz, Cassie Hicks, Maggie (Tyler) Lloyd, Angela (Ryan) Bailey, Kevin Swenson, Stephanie Swenson, Kenneth Swenson, Korbin Swenson, Robert Swenson and Erin Swenson; 4 great-grandchildren, Carson and Parker Lloyd, Ava Schwartz and Isabelle Travaille; 2 sisters, Darlene H. Hughes and Faye Struble; sister-in-laws, Shirley Swenson and Fern (Robert) Smith; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Leona Hughes; a brother, Wayne (Patricia) Hughes, a brother-in-law Myron Swenson and a grand son-in-law, Andrew Hicks.
