Swartz Funeral Home - Flint Obituary

PEPPER, JEANNE CHERYL

Age 77 was born Dec 29th 1946 in Iowa and left us suddenly on April 29th. She was the first of five children born to the late Robert and Margaret Pepper.

Her family moved frequently in her formative years, bringing Jeanne to Salt Lake City Utah for high school graduation. She returned to the family hub of Wisconsin graduating from UWW and earning a Masters degree in Communications at the University of Wisconsin. She excelled as a speaker at her college commencement, and was subsequently recognized as an Outstanding Alumni in 1980. She began working at AC Spark Plug in 1977, bringing her to the company she would shape and retire from 30+ years later, and to the community which would become her hometown, Flint, Michigan. Admired and respected throughout her career in the divisions of General Motors, she was known as being kind, fair, ethical and intelligent.

Through work, she met her husband of 46 years, Thomas Herman, who tells everyone he meets that Jeanne is the greatest thing that’s ever happened to him.

She became a beloved parent to his five children: John, Michael, Kelly, Daniel and Mark and Grandma Jeanne to Leo. She seamlessly blended the Herman and Pepper families with grace, highlighting the strengths that each member contributed to the family. Her compassion led her to unofficially adopt many other children into the family, ultimately becoming Grandma Jeanne to their children.

She was a shining star of generosity within the Flint community, actively participating with many organizations: Flint Civil Service Commission, Flint Cultural Center, Sloan Museum, Whiting Auditorium, Salem Housing, Whaley Historical House, American Cancer Society, United Way, Art Club, Shakespeare Club, Women’s Club, and mentoring students at Washington elementary school. She was a woman of strength and organization who enjoyed the outdoors and planned wonderful adventures. As the consummate hostess, people remember the wonderful meals and parties she orchestrated.

Jeanne was generous with her time, love, and thoughtfulness. People view their interactions with her as having a positive influence in their lives and being the one who brought people together. She will be missed by many:

Not sure what to say?

As a fellow member of the Woodside Church congregation and an early member of the HermanPepper TuesdayNighters gatherings, Jeanne Pepper's passing was a shocking loss for me. She was such a gracious lady who was very supportive to most everyone she came in contact with. She always made me feel special whether it was in a church committee meeting, at a Tuesday night get together or during an exercise walk with Tom on a Genesee Recreation trail.

Along with many others, "I am missing...

I am so sorry for your loss. I met Jeanne and Tom as Southwestern Swim Team Parents. We became friends and coworkers. A special memory is being a participant in their Robert Service Poetry Parties. I am grateful that our journeys were connected. Loving thoughts to all the family. Dorcas McIntosh

May your soul rest in peace - shanti

So sorry for your loss Tom and family. I knew you both from Woodside Church and remember a visit and hike when you came to Las Cruces, NM when we moved there.
I know Jeanne will be missed every day
Sending love and hugs to you all.

Tom, this is shocking news as I know she was the best thing that ever happened to you as you would always say when introducing yourself to the new staff at Sloan Museum or Longway. I seen you two a few months ago at Timothy’s pub. It was a pleasure seeing their smiles. Her beautiful spirit shines in our hearts forever. Tom and the family, My condolences to you.

Tom I want you to know how very sorry I am for your loss. I have never worked with anyone I admired and respected more than Jeanne. She was special and had the best heart. I learned a lot from her over the years and always felt that she was special in her job. I often told her that I thought she was on the wrong side of the table. At the same time I admired the way she conducted her business. She was always so patient with me when we had issues at work. My deepest condolences to you and...

I'm so sorry. This is just shocking news. I checked our contact and 11 months ago she was planning a month long trip with you, Tom, and she and I were trying to figure out when to get together. I'm unsure what happened -- illness or accident -- but she was a bright light gone too soon. I know the whole family plus many more will miss her. Roz
