I was very saddened to just hear this news. I have such warm memories of Prof. Hayes' art history classes: late afternoon field trips to the art museum, mounting a museum exhibit of stained glass, and lively seminar discussions. Prof. Hayes was an excellent teacher and mentor. My sympathies are with his family.
