Giver of Maxims

Nathan Hersch does not remember the first time he heard one of his father's memorable maxims. Maybe they had just returned from Police Athletic League baseball practice. Maybe they were walking the family dog in the neighborhood park across the street. Maybe he was home from school and his father, Jeffrey A. Hersch, an assistant vice president at J. P. Morgan, had come home from work in Manhattan.

Whenever it was, Nathan, who grew up in the family's two-bedroom apartment in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, was probably avoiding his studies. "You have so much potential, why are you wasting it?" his father sometimes asked. "We're not rich enough for you to be stupid."

Nathan Hersch, now 35 and a senior vice president in the human resources department at Citigroup, remembered that his father always said he should work hard in school. The elder Mr. Hersch, who was 53, attended City College for a semester before dropping out to join the Army during the Vietnam War. When he returned, he earned a bachelor's degree from Brooklyn College and later a master's degree in economics.

After 30 years with J. P. Morgan, in 2000 Jeffrey Hersch went to work as an accountant at Cantor Fitzgerald, on the 101st floor of 1 World Trade Center. His wife, Leslie Sue Hersch, said Sept. 11 was his first day back at work after a two-week vacation in Ireland and Scotland. The couple loved to travel, and had been to 28 countries together. "We both figured we'd retire at 59," she said, "and do more traveling."

Not sure what to say?

Dear Leslie & Family,

You may remember me...we worked in the Bullion Dept. at JPM a long time ago. You were in operations and I was in the Financial Division. I am so sorry for your loss. As you will remember I also worked with Jeff while he was in the General Ledger group. I am trilled to hear that you are OK. I was always concerned that Jeff followed you to work at the World Trade Center and that you too perished. I wish you well. I will always cherish my conversations with...

I just found this site 10 years later. I grew up with Jeffrey in Sea Gate, in Brooklyn, NY. I remember when he had a crush on my sister. As the years went by, people moved away. Right before 9-11, he brought his dog to my girlfriend, who owns a grooming shop. He was a new customer, and they began talking. When he told her he grew up in Sea Gate, she mentioned my name. She called me that day, and told me who came into her store. We were supposed to get together. However, Jeffrey and...

To the family:
May the consoling words from family and friends continue to strengthen you during this difficult time, and may you find comfort in the words found in the Holy Scriptures: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

May the wonderful memories of your loved one continue to provide a measure of comfort to you--until God's promises are...

Jeff and I worked at J.P. Morgan together and it was a privilege to have known him. He was a wonderful friend. We used to take lunch together. Jeff had a dry wit about him and it was this wit that made him funny. I also had the pleasure of meeting his wonderful wife Leslie. I'm sorry we did not stay in touch after J.P. Morgan.

My heart goes out to his family, especially Leslie and their son. I'm sure the pain is still there.

Dear Family,
My name is Christine and I lost my father, Stephen J. Fiorelli, on 9/11.
This anniversary, I will be reading Jeffrey A. Hersch's name at Ground Zero. Please know I will keep Jeffrey, his family, and his friends in my prayers that day.
He was a true hero, as were they all.
God Bless!

I worked with Jeff many years ago at JPM. I always remember him as a light hearted but competent man. Someone who could laugh and joke but who was always serious about what he was doing. In all, he was someone easy to admire.

My thoughts and best wishes are with his family.

In memory....

As I cross-stitched your name on the memorial that I am doing for all of the victims, I prayed for you and your family. Please know that your death was not in vain. We will always remember. God Bless.

Dear Leslie and Family,
The last time I spoke to Jeff he was looking for consulting work after the job at Morgan ended. Curtis ended his 30 years at work the same way Jeff did. And we moved to CA., where our kids live, to begin again.

We knew several people working at the WTC and scoured the list of names for hope against hope to find none of them on there. I saw Jeff's name but thought, why would he be working for Cantor when he was looking to consult on his own, and...
