My prayers are with the family left behind by my former Birmingham News colleague Jeff Roberts. He passed away too young.
When I needed a photo for a social event that I didn't attend, he always reported back to me with colorful, inciteful observances that really helped me write the Social Scene and Faces columns. He was a loyal friend, always conscientious about his work.

Years have passed since Jeff and I spent time together and I just learned of his passing today. As i walked into a gym Friday night to see my youngest daughter perform in a school talent show, my older was upset before we entered. I asked her did she remember when many years ago she performed in this same show, and her grandmother stumbled through the accompaniment, but she retained composure and continued singing until the piano caught up.
