At 28, Jenine Gonzalez already knew that life could be short. In February, her mother died of pneumonia after a long bout with cancer. Then, in late August, the singer and actress Aaliyah, 22, died in a plane crash. Ms. Gonzalez, who loved music and dancing, looked up to Aaliyah as a role model, even styling her hair — long, black and wavy — the way the singer did.
When her mother died, Ms. Gonzalez decided to start taking steps to build her own business. She wanted to be an events coordinator, the kind of person who organizes concerts for Latin and hip-hop bands, said Orlando Diaz, who is married to a cousin of Ms. Gonzalez and knew her for 10 years.
"She always had a smile on her face," Mr. Diaz, 28, said. "From the moment she set her eyes on you, she made you feel special."
During the day, Ms. Gonzalez worked as an executive assistance for Aon Insurance, but the rest of the time, she was busy planning her business.
"She would bring home stacks of books from Barnes & Noble," Mr. Diaz said. "She also started to attend business seminars and she made it a point to introduce herself to every band manager and party planner she met. She was on her way."

Janine was my student in grades 5 and 6 and brought a special energy and love to everyone she met. Every year on 9/11 I post a special message and memory about her. She was an energy ball of love and life and will always honour her memory on 9/11

Thinking of you today Jenine. I miss you pulling up in your White Truck when I was fresh out of high school starting my company's. You were so sweet. I love when my mom and aunts use to hang with you in PA and we just go out to eat and stay at the best hotels. Life was so easier then. Love you and watch over up there in heaven. I'm sorry for being a couple of days late in wishing you a happy birthday. I've been busy, but I certainly haven't forgotten about you. To the contrary, I'm still trying to do something for you. It's not much, but it comes from the heart and I think your family would like it. It's been a year now and I still haven't given up and until I complete it, I never will.
