Jerome ("Jerry", "Red", "Peck's Bad Boy") Brill passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, February 25th, 2016 at The Bridge at Lake Pointe Landing in Hendersonville, NC. He was born June 7th, 1926 in New York, NY; a son of the late Max and Dorothy (Mackler) Brill. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Lorraine (Phillips) Brill (2007), and his younger brother Stanley Brill (1984).
Jerry grew up in the Bronx, NY, and graduated from James Monroe High Class of 1944 before proudly serving his country in the United States Army Air Corps in World War II. He was stationed during the Allied Occupation in Wiesbaden, Germany as a Draftsman, and achieved the rank of Sergeant. He arrived home during demobilization of Europe and was honorably discharged at Fort Dix, New Jersey in 1947. He joined his family in Miami, Florida, where received a Bachelor's of Fine Arts Degree while at the University of Miami. Jerry moved back up to New York City and attended the Art Students League, New York, NY. He also attended New York University, where he earned his Master's of Education Degree.
After graduating he became an art educator as well as the Director of Art department at Hauppauge Schools in Hauppauge, New York. During this time Jerry and Lorraine married and settled in West Islip, New York on Long Island. Jerry proudly served as President of the Library Board of Trustees for the West Islip Public Library for many years.
After retiring from education, Jerry and Lorraine moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina. They enjoyed their retired life together, and sharing good times with the many friends they held dear. Jerry involved himself with many volunteer opportunities over the years, including the Friends of the Library in Hendersonville, work in the Pisgah Forest, an usher at the Flat Rock Playhouse, screening at the Interfaith Assistance Ministry, and at Blue Ridge Community College in the department of Life Long Learning.
Most importantly, Jerry was a happy fun loving man with a very gentle nature; a fabulous Dad to his children and a loving husband to Lorraine. He created his own cards for birthdays, holidays, for friends as thank you's, and other occasions. These cards are cherished by the recipients. He had created art over the years, but he especially enjoyed doodling on every scrap of paper within reach. He was truly 89 years young, retaining his sense of humor until he passed.
Jerry is survived by his son, Jeffrey Brill and his wife, Kimberly of Haverhill, MA; daughter Lorri Brill-Hickson (Michael) of Fletcher, NC; sister, Sondra Cohen and her husband Stephen Goldzman of La Palma, CA; niece, Melissa Pearson Campbell and her husband Tut Campbell of Long Beach, CA; his nephew Eric Cohen and his wife Rana of Venice Beach, CA, along with several grand nieces and nephews, and a great grandniece.
Jerry and his family would like to thank the staff at Carolina Village Medical Center, The Bridge at Lake Pointe Landing, and his care team from Four Seasons Hospice for the loving care they have provided to him over the past few months.
The Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 2nd, 2016 in Thos. Shepherd's Church Street Chapel conducted by the Reverend Steve Jones. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Jerry's memory be directed to Four Seasons Hospice, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731; or to Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, Post Office Box 8195, Asheville, NC 28814.
An online register book is available for family and friends by visiting www.thosshepherd.com. Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors and Cremation Memorial Center is in charge of the arrangements.

Not sure what to say?

Well, this AM I stopped and thought about Jerry and the thought came to my mind that he was also a little "hard" towards me and sometimes his criticism could be a little sharp. But this was in a good way. To my teenage, sensitive self it might have been embarrasing or seem insensitive but he achieved the desired affect. It helped me to start thinking a little deeper, to push myself a little more, to use my talents and not take them for granted. And I think this has stayed with me and helped...

Jerry lives in my heart everyday. He is why I am an artist and an educator. In the summer of 75 he knew I needed work and asked me to paint his house, I hope he didn't regret it, I was not a house painter. When I was finished I gave him one of my painting to say thank you. Jerry returned reciprocated and gave me one of his famous doodles when I graduated. God bless you Jerry.

If it wasn't for Mr. Brill I would never have gone to Art School. He challenged me in many ways and I challenged him just the same. He inspired me to see color in ways most people cannot, he inspired me to see shapes and forms that most people take for granted. He showed me the masters and how they worked the paint on the ends of their paint brushes. I graduated from Hauppauge High School in 1979 and went off to Alfred University School of Art and Design. When I graduated college I went back...

Mr. Brill was one of my art teachers at Hauppauge HS and influenced my decision to continue my art education at the Art Students League, SUNY@Farmingdale and at The School of Visual Arts. He was a good teacher and inspired us to be creative and to appreciate our uniqueness. Just recently, I attended a painting workshop at Kanuga Institute in Hendersonville and if I had known he was so close by, I would've really enjoyed seeing him.

My condolences and prayers go out to his family. Your...

My condolences to the family and friends of a man who encouraged and inspired my art work. 4 fine years under the tutoring of a great teacher at Hauppauge High School were a dream come true. Constant urging by you and Mr. Albert to take the scholarship entrance exam at New York-Phoenix School of design won me a scholarship in 10th grade and a partial scholarship in 12th grade! Thank you! This experience changed my life and added enrichment. One of my teachers at NY-PSD was Bob Montana,...

Mr.Brill was my art teacher at Hauppauge H.S. from 1961 to 1964 when I graduated, He was a great teacher and friend during those years always calling me his Buddy,I loved sculpture and after college and a few white collar jobs, I purchased my first collision repair shop and made a good living using my hands sculpturing those dent cars, He would say close your eyes, now let your fingers be your eyes, well it worked well for me..My God Bless you and have his hand out to welcome you home. R.I.P.

Mr. Brill was my art teacher at Hauppauge HS in the 60's. He was a lovely man who always encouraged me despite my obvious lack of talent. I always treasure the doodle of me he wrote in my yearbook.
Amazingly I too live in Hendersonville and only wish I knew he'd retired here so I might have said hello.
He was a special teacher and man. I'm glad he had such a long and happy life.

Mr.Brill...how you cared for and encouraged your students. Personally, you showed, to me, great patience and encouragement. Much to my surprise, you suggested a piece of art work I had completed be entered into a local competetion sponsored by Abraham & Strauss , and it won a blue ribbon. You then provided surprise #2 and asked if you could have the piece as you wanted to display it in your bathroom. "Your bathroom" I exclaimed, upon which you assured me it was, in fact, one of the most...

Mr. Brill was a great inspiration to me during my years at Hauppauge High School. He trusted me and afforded me the freedom and guidance to discover my most creative self. I am finishing my 30 year teaching career in Art at PatchogueMedford High School. I will always remember Mr. Brill's advice and tough criticism as a great motivation in my growth. Condolences to his family and friends.
