JEROME L. STEIN

STEIN--Professor Jerome Leon Stein, died on February 7th in Providence, Rhode Island. He was the son of Meyer and Ida Stein and the husband of Hadassah Levow Stein, and brother of Samuel (Sherry) Stein. He was the father of Seth (Carol) Stein, Gil (Liz Reistroffer) Stein and Ilana (Abraham) Ben-Ze'ev. He was the loving grandfather of Jonathan, Leora, Rachel, Abigail and Hannah, and the late David Stein. Professor Stein was born in New York City on November 14, 1928, and educated at Brooklyn College. Jerome Stein received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1955 and Docteur Honoris Causa from the Universite de la Mediterranee, Aix-Marseille II in 1997. His entire academic career was spent at Brown University, where he joined the Department of Economics in 1953. While he formally retired as Eastman Professor of Economics in 1993 he continued his scholarly work in the Division of Applied Mathematics. In a long and distinguished career, he served on editorial boards of several prestigious economics journals, published over a dozen books and authored over a hundred scholarly articles. The range of his academic contributions included monetary and fiscal policy, economic growth, applications of stochastic optimal control to international finance and debt crises, and policies for natural hazard mitigation. His colleagues and students will remember him as a committed scholar, an inspiring mentor and a trusted friend. His funeral was held on Friday, February 8, at the Lincoln Park Chapel, Warwick, RI at 11am. Shiva will be at the Stein residence, 229 Medway Street, Providence from 2-4pm and 7-9pm, with Minyan at 7pm, through Wednesday. Contributions in honor of Jerome L.
