I never swam competitively but "Mr. Holtrey" was my phy Ed teacher for many years. He made us all become strong, confident , swimmers teaching us survival techniques and forcing us to do the dreaded "20 minute swim" as well as the "Holtrey special" (inverted planks). 35 years later, I dabble with open water swimming, and Sail competitively, and I appreciate that he forced us to adapt to challenging conditions. He also entertained up all the younger kids by sprinkling pepper on his bananas...

Covered Jerry's swim teams at Gilmour and Hawken. Kind of quiet but a great coach. Once he got to know you, he'd loosen up and showed a sense of humor. Could never tell if he was kidding or being serious with me. Once told me he had one lung because of all the chlorine and bad ventilation in the various pools. Also told me he hit his head on the board while he was diving. Couldn't figure out if he was being serious. A very modest person, in spite of all the great teams and swimmers he had....
