Jerry-Leatherman-Obituary

Jerry Frank Leatherman

Obituary

Leatherman, Jerry Frank Jerry died Thursday mor- ning, January 29th at Methodist Hospital. He had been at Regency for the prior three weeks battling pneumonia. He made it to his 77th birthday on the 6th of January. On that day he sang an operatic lyric and disturbed the entire I.C.U. floor. He was a boisterous and generous person. He was a great mentor to my brother Dave, my step-brother Josh and me. Pam, his wife of many years and primary caregiver for the years that really mattered, wished for Jerry to be cremated and will have no service. A memorial donation in Jerry's name is available with the Humane Society of Minnesota. Use this link, www.networkforgood.org, and go to "Donate", and dedicate in Jerry's name. Jerry lived his life without regret and certainly to the fullest. Vicariously is something others did. He leaves behind three grand kids (and one on-the-way) who are glad to have known such a colorful and cantankerous individual; my brother, Dave Leatherman & Josh and Danielle Anderson, his younger siblings David Leatherman and Linda Grosz. Jerry served the country he loved as a Navy pilot, captained the Boeing 747 in Asia for Northwest Orient Airlines and leaves a legacy of memories and stories to be shared for generations to come. You will be missed, love Steve.

Guest Book

Not sure what to say?

he was a great grampa I wasn't really close to him but we still had our fun. God bless you and grandma Janelle.

Sorry to be so long in expressing my condolences in Jerry's guest book, but the recent death of my wife, Lou Ann, has made this sort of thing all the more difficult. However, in spite of all of the wonderful comments that have been made, I feel compelled to add a few more.
I considered Jerry one of my closest friends. Like Barry James, we spent many hours together in the cabs of pickup trucks, VW buses and campers, motor homes and Jerry and Barry's float plane going fishing, hunting,...

My deepest condolences to the entire Leatherman family. Jerry was one of the family to me. Most of my early memories either involved Jerry or at least stories about him. To say that he was a mentor or an "ideal" is an understatement. He was a great man and even a better friend to many!!

I'll never forget flying with Jerry... The year was 1989 and I had just recently completed training as a 747-400 F/O. We were flying a 400 between MSP and DTW on a fine spring day. Everybody was proud to have the 400 on Northwest property because it meant that we were buying big aircraft for the long term - and the future looked bright. That day's full flight had, I think, about 150 non-rev's on it - most of them commuters. But it also had my in-laws on it as well. Once Jerry found this...

We spent many hours, flying, fishing, hunting and having an occasional adult beverage together. he was a good friend, with a heart of gold & will be missed deeply.

Heartfelt condolences to the Leatherman family. I was a young Northwest pilot when I had the distinct pleasure of flying with Jerry. He was a "Captain's Captain." Unique, fun-loving -- a great guy to all around him. His style and charisma take us back to the good ole days! We will miss him greatly!

Dear Pam & family,

Words cannot express ones cherished memories of Jerry. We have so many!!!!We are blessed to have you & your family as friends for so many years...

God Bless.
Barry,Treva & Jeremy

Dear Letterman Family,
I flew man hours as Jerry's copilot. I have fond memories of all of them. He was fun. He was professional in an unconventional way. He never hestitated to offer help to anyone who might need it. Like, you I will miss him.
Another old boat pilot,
Dave

My deepest sympathy to the Leatherman family. I can add very little to the previous comments except that I was also one of the lucky ones to have known and worked with him. Everyone had a smile on their face when in his presence. What a great guy!
