Jess Lesley “Les” Bond, 91, of Wichita Falls passed away Monday, February 12, 2018.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, February 19, 2018 at Owens and Brumley Funeral Home in Wichita Falls with Richard Rust officiating. The family will receive friends for a visitation and viewing from 12 until 1 p.m. prior to the service. Interment with military honors will follow at Crestview Memorial Park under the direction of Owens and Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls.
Les was born on April 30, 1926 in Wichita Falls to the late William Carl and Ira Mae Bond. Les grew up on Pennsylvania street during the great depression, and attended Sam Houston Elementary, Zundy Junior High, and Wichita Falls Senior High, graduating in 1944. After working a few months for Wichita Engineering Company, and knowing he would be drafted into the Army, he joined the Navy three days before his eighteenth birthday. He was stationed at Whidbey Island, Washington servicing PBY seaplanes until his discharge. He then returned to Wichita Falls, and Wichita Engineering Company.
Les married the late Hugh Dorothy Metcalf on July 24, 1948. Shortly after, he began working for Fox-Randel Chevrolet. After a tragic car accident, and a year of recovery, the couple opened a Dairy Mart on Grant Street in 1967, and operated it until 1973. Les then went to work for the Wichita County Sherriff’s Office, retiring in 1990. In his later years, Les enjoyed playing dominoes and singing karaoke at the Red Door.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; granddaughter Courtney Bunker; brothers Alvin, Buddy (William Lee), and Paul Bond; and a sister, Dora Johnston.
He is survived by daughter Cynthia Bunker and husband Jay of Edmond, Oklahoma; son John Bond and wife Zoe Ann of Fort Worth; four grandchildren; brother Charles Bond and wife Shirley of Wichita Falls; along with various cousins, nieces, and nephews. A special Thank You to Susie and Ernie Johnston for their help and support in his later years.
“My life span has brought many memories, some happy, and some sad, but we live life the way God plans it, and we accept it that way.”
