Not sure what to say?

Mrs. Gardner,
As I streamed the Memorial Day weekend service at Calvary Baptist, I was saddened to hear that Mr. Gardner had passed away. During my years at UK and Calvary (1971-78), I was abundantly blessed by his and your teaching and friendship.

Please convey my sympathy to Lewis and John as well.

My widowed mother, who well remembers you and Mr. Gardner from my college days, sends her sincere condolences as well.

Keeping you in our prayers,

Tom Bugg

Paul Mansfiel, Brint Milward and Cathy Maxson Bright said what I felt and would have said.
I can add that he was amazingly humble, never mentioning his heroism in WW2 or his academic achievements.

I wish I had known he and Davis taught a Bible study - I would have attended.

The first day of the first class he taught at U-Hi, General Science, he held up a dime and said assume everything known is it that dime. I want you to remember that what we don't know is like the Empire...

So sorry to hear of Sonny's passing. Mary Frances Blanton Rama & Sandy Blanton Cole. Old Hodgenville family friends.

Nell Davis Gardner and Family,

You are in our thoughts and prayers today. Sorry I am unable to attend . May God be with you in the days to come.
Cousin Betty Timberlake Edwards

Lewis,
Sorry for your loss.

Jess Gardner was one of those larger than life figures who brought a great wit and brilliant mind into his classrooms at University High. As a younger underclassman I knew him first by reputation, and then first hand as my teacher. He left indelible marks in my mind, and in my heart. Rest well Mr. Gardner. Oh how we loved you. He was one-of-a kind and I send my most heartfelt condolences to his family.

Lewis,
I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

What a wonderful and full life! I knew Mr. Gardner at U-High as a science teacher. He was a favorite teacher with a wonderful wit and a willingness to play devil's advocate in class. The most important thing that he taught his students was how to be critical thinkers.

What an awesome father to have been blessed with. Even tho I never met your Dad, I wish I had. Lewis and all your family and friends I am truly sorry for the heart break you feel. While your Father is rejoicing in Heaven with those that have proceeded him. Love, prayers and hugs.
