COZINE & TARVER FUNERAL HOME - GREENVILLE Obituary

Jesse “Jessie” Benton, Sr, 90, passed away in Greenville, Texas on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

Jesse “Jessie” Benton, Sr, was born on Thursday, May 23, 1935 to the parentage of Walter and Edna Stevens Benton in Jefferson, Texas.  At an early age, Jesse’s dedication and love for his family prompted him to quit school to help take care of his brother.

Jesse had a successful career as an employee of the Rock-Tenn Company and remained a dedicated worker until his retirement.  He professed his faith in Jesus Christ and united with Mt. Elem Baptist Church.  He also lifted his voice in praise to the Lord through singing in the gospel group, The Zion Trumpets.

June 23, 1999, Jesse and Mabel Brookline were united in holy matrimony.

Jesse was passionate and enjoyed fishing with his wife, gardening and working in his yard.  He was full of love, fun and laughter.

Loved ones left to cherish Jessie’s precious memory:  wife, Mabel Brookline Benton; a sister, Lesssie B. Cole of Jefferson, Texas; children, Johnnie Benton (Jacqueline), Elbert Benton (Ebony) Darlene Benton Jones, Debbie Brookins Bush (Adrian), Betty Brookins, Terri Brookins, Patti Brookins (Mike), Wanda Brookins (Kendall), Leo Brookins, Jr. (Jane) and Michael Brookins (Mamie); grandchildren, Chasity Benton, Stephone’y Stanfield, Shamonica Stanfield along with a host of  grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Edna Steven’s Benton; two sons, Jessie Benton, Jr and Tim Benton; brothers, Willie Lee Benton, Walter Benton, Jr., Eddie J. Benton and Theo Benton and sisters, Clydia Bell Benton and Oreda Gray.
