Send FlowersJessie Austin, age 94, of Glenwood, died Thursday, November 15, 2007.
She was born on March 1, 1913 at Saratoga, Arkansas, the daughter of Ernest McElyea and Lonnie Winona Adkinson McElyea. On August 31, 1935, she was married to Lowell Austin who preceded her in death on December 7, 1989. She was also preceded in death by an infant son; her parents; her son, Jack Austin; her great-great grandson, Kyle Jordan; and her brother, Herschel McElyea.
Mrs. Austin was a 1954 graduate of Henderson State Teachers College in Arkadelphia, but she began teaching in 1932 at Langley. She also taught at Piney Grove, Rosboro, Daisy, Kirby, Amity and retired from Glenwood School District in 1976. She was certified in library science and elementary education. She was a member of the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association and a member of the Glenwood Church of Christ. She was an avid reader and enjoyed serving in her church.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Gene Binder of Austin, Texas; her daughter-in-law, Pat Austin of Glenwood; four grandchildren and their spouses, Randy and Patty Austin of Glenwood, Mindy Shaw of Nacogdoches, Texas, Julie and Andy Ramzel of Houston, Texas and Stephanie and Mark Smith of Bryant; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and Linda Hollifield, her devoted caregiver for the past 10 years.
Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, November 19, 2007 at the Glenwood Church of Christ with Todd Deaver and Roger Cox officiating.
Visitation will be held Sunday evening, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
Interment will be in the Glenwood Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood.
Pallbearers will be Paul Shelton, Stanley Beck, Bryan Burtsfield, Ted Egleston, Jerry Yates and Mark Foshee.
Memorials may be made to the Glenwood Church of Christ Building Fund at P.O. Box 405, Glenwood, Arkansas, 71943.

Aunt Jessie was truly a unique lady. She was the epitome of kindness. She loved all of her family and friends unconditionally. She worried about us all too. Every time someone would ask her how she was feeling, her answer was always, "Fine, fine. How's ____ doing?" She was always asking about others while her health was failing.

Words cannot express what Miss Jessie meant to everyone at the Glenwood Church of Christ. She was a true example of what it means to be a Christian. She never let her illness keep her from worship. She never complained about her hurts and was always concerned about how others were feeling. She was an example and an inspiration to all the Glenwood church family. She will truly be missed.
