Macon, GA- Jim Hardy, age 86, passed away on Sunday, December 02, 2012. He was born in Macon to the late James F. and Philamena Hardy. As a 19-year old, newly returned from U.S. Navy service in the Pacific during WW II, he met Sarah Beck in Macon and they married on February 16, 1946.
During his career as an electrician, he trained and "turned out" scores of Middle Georgia electricians. He also served many terms as president of the local union of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and was a member of Fort Hawkins Masonic Lodge 418.
A deacon and life-long member of Mabel White Baptist Church, in his early days he was known for hosting large gatherings of youth at his home, and in more recent times for backyard fish-fry events feeding nearly a hundred senior citizens.
For many years he volunteered with John H. Heard Elementary School on landscaping projects, building bookcases and patios, installing ceiling fans in classrooms, and many other enhancements for students. A member of the Rutland Lions Club since 1969, Jim was recognized with a Melvin Jones Fellow awarded by Lions Club International for a lifetime of community service.
He is survived by Sarah Hardy, his wife of 67 years, and three children: Lynda Wiggins of Fairburn, Jerry Hardy (Diana) of San Antonio, Texas and Michelle (David) Collins of Macon. He was the youngest of 13 children and his sole surviving sibling is Helen Kilgore of Macon. He loved his grandchildren: Courtney Wilson, Amanda Wiggins, Jamie Luther (Ben) and Cody Wilson and held a special place in his heart for great granddaughters Cami and Abby Luther.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6:00-8:00 PM at Crest Lawn.
The funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. The Reverend Joe McDaniel will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors.
