Obituary

Jo Ellen Keith, was born on September 1, 1945 and passed away on September 8, 2017 from complications from Stage IV Melanoma Cancer at the John Muir Health Center in Walnut Creek. Jo was a California girl, who was born in the World War II boom town of Long Beach. Her dad, Thomas worked as an expert welder at the California Shipbuilding Corporation during the 1940’s, and welding played a crucial role in winning World War II. After the war ended, the Keith family eventually moved to La Habra, and her dad worked at Standard Oil for 25 years as a welder, and supervisor, while her mom, Doris June was a creative homemaker, who participated in many outside activities.

Jo Ellen graduated from La Habra High School in 1963, and then was accepted into the first freshman class at Orange State College in Fullerton. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Geography, at California State University, Fullerton in 1969.  Getting her BA was delayed when our dear Jo was diagnosed with a pituitary brain tumor. At 19 years old she underwent surgery to remove her pituitary gland. This medical condition affected her lifestyle, but it was also one of the reasons why Jo savored life so much more.

In 1969 Jo Ellen started her career at Chevron Research in La Habra, which in 1971 relocated several of its employees from Bakersfield, Juneau, and La Habra to San Francisco. Jo was thrilled that she was part of the team that was being transferred to Northern California, and was also excited about the possibility of exploring this picturesque area. Jo Ellen had a thirty-year career with Chevron Corporation, which eventually transferred its headquarters and many employees from the City of San Francisco to the East Bay, first to Concord, and eventually to San Ramon, California. When computers started appearing on employees desks in the mid-80’s, Jo Ellen immediately started training herself in this new technology, and also in computer programming. She was one of the “go to people”, if other employees needed computer assistance.

In 1999, Jo Ellen retired as a Database Manager, from Chevron Corporation. But, Jo continued learning her entire life, and completed more than 40 plus units at a nearby college with a straight “A” average, and a Graphic Design Credential.

Jo was always on the go, and enjoyed driving in her convertible, and sharing her experiences with friends. “Go Jo” took many driving trips, which included going to the Sierra Nevada mountains, The Gold Country, Yosemite National Park, Napa Valley Wine Country, or up the coast to Mendocino, or down to the coastal cities of Carmel or Monterey for the weekend. She always enjoyed life to the fullest, and her motto was IGO4FUN, (which was her license plate) and a phrase she lived by. Besides weekend trips, she loved doing genealogy research, taking creative photographs, working on stained glass projects, RV camping at beautiful Lake Tahoe, attending college classes, playing with her adorable kitties, going to community summer concerts, sailing around the beautiful San Francisco Bay, and traveling internationally to Canada, Europe, and South America. which included sailing through the Panama Canal. She especially liked cruising as she got older. Jo Ellen will be remembered by her friends and family, for her laughter, the fun times shared, and a “Joy for Life”.

Jo Ellen is survived by her mom, Doris (Hughes) Keith of Concord, CA, brother, Alan Keith of Forestville, CA, sister-in-law, Susan (Jones) Keith of Mountain View, her two nephews, Andrew Keith of San Francisco, & Stuart Keith of Mountain View, and her many cousins and their families, and her forever friend, Coni Lowe. It is planned that eventually Jo Ellen’s ashes will be scattered at sea. In lieu of flowers, please give someone you love a big hug. Life is way too short to be anything but happy.

Not sure what to say?

I met Jo over 40 years ago through Coni, a college classmate. I recall that when visiting their apartment in SF, I noticed that Jo had quite an extensive rock & geode collection, which I thought rather strange! Later, when informed of her background and position at Standard Oil, it all made perfect sense! I feel so fortunate to have had my life path cross with Jo's. She was intelligent, witty and had the most hardy laugh! Jo had a lust for life and a thrist for adventure. Just sharing a meal...

I knew Jo Ellen since the late 1980s when we moved to San Ramon where she filled a much needed slot in our grav-mag staff, almost single-handedly cataloguing and loading huge quantities of information for the GGIS data bases. Her calm professional approach to projects was invaluable.
After we both retired, we would meet for lunch on regular basis, keeping up with events of friends and family, news and her travels.
We also recalled those Chevron moments that were maybe better...

We were fortunate to meet this wonderful lady along with Coni and Evette on a Mexican Cruise. What a great three some. We had our cousin Ola with us and having these ladies as table mates was awesome. The joy they brought with them was wonderful. It really made our cruise. We have been on 42 cruises, and this was one of our most memorable. These three ladies had a lot to do with that. R.I.P. Jo Ellen. Beautiful lady.

I remember Jo Ellen as Auntie Jo Jo, as she was my one and only aunt. I´m writing this just after Christmas, when she would come down with Coni and my Grandma and stay at our house every year. This year she was deeply missed by us all. She would always have great energy, and truly lived life to the fullest. It seemed like she was always traveling somewhere, which is something that I really admired, and would like the opportunity to do later in life. Jo will be greatly missed - Rest In Peace...

I met Coni & Jo Ellen at "Music & Market" Series at "Todos Santos" Park in the summer of 2011 Jo Ellen was a very Caring & Loving Lady who always had a smile on her face I will miss her greatly RIP Jo Ellen. I Love You!!!

I always admired Jo Ellen´s passion for life and travel. Jo could drive a few hours just to see one thing she had read about and make an adventure out of thin air! She loved life. My deepest condolences dear Coni, it´s not going to be easy to continue your journey, but try to find strength in your memories. With all my love, Tina

I knew Jo Ellen my entire life. Yes, I am Jo's younger brother (by 3-1/2 years). As you can imagine, I have a great many memories of Jo Ellen, mostly good (as good as can be growing up in the shadow of a wiser, more mature older sister). ;-) Although I'm sure she found having me as a brother challenging at times (we seemed to live on different planets), she was always thoughtful and overly generous to me, my parents and others as well (that goes for her lifelong friend, Coni, too). I don't...

I met Jo Ellen at our Bechtel lunches a number of years ago and always enjoyed hearing about her trips. I will remember her laughter and her enjoyment for life even when her heath was declining. She was a fighter. Will miss her at our lunches. With deepest sympathy.

I am indeed very fortunate to have met Jo Ellen through Coni by way of a van pool rideshare program. I was immediately taken under their wing and taken to places and experiences that I will always treasure. I was always amazed at the zest for doing, going and living they shared in common. Jo Ellen was always warm and caring to me from the moment I met her. She had a fantastic laugh and a smile to light up a room. I will always remember the trips to Tahoe, the antique auctions, movies at the...
