Joan Delores Haas

Joan Delores Haas, 77, died peacefully, surrounded by her family and loved-ones on the evening of Monday, November 7, 2011, at Martha Jefferson Hospital. She was born in Pearsonville, New Jersey, on June 20, 1934, the daughter of the late Ralph and Edith Newman. Joan grew up in Bordentown, New Jersey, met her husband and best friend, Jim Haas, there, married him on April 24, 1954, and raised a family in the same home town. Early in their marriage, Joan was a switchboard operator for NJ Bell Telephone. During their fifty-seven year marriage, Jim and Joan raised four children, Valerie J. Massey of Kents Store, James E. Haas Jr. of Mount Laurel, New Jersey, Ralph J. Haas of Hesperia, California and Matthew S. Haas of Charlottesville, Virginia. After all other children grew up and moved on, James and Joan moved to Kents Store, Virginia, where they have lived for the past twenty-two (22) years. Joan loved gardening, flowers, spending time at the shore, creating arts and crafts, and finding the occasional treasure at a yard sale. She enjoyed her children and grandchildren. Mom was a true homemaker who was devoted to her husband and children. She spent her time as an industrious person and always paid attention to improving her home with care and a creative touch. She is known to her family as Mom, Grandmom, and Sweetheart. Along with children and husband, Joan is survived by her three sisters and brother, Carol Brecko, Sandra Jackson, Linda Goodnow and Ralph Newman Jr.; and her grandchildren, Zoe, Miranda, Ian, Destiny, Mark, and Elaine Haas. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Friday, November 11, 2011, at Byrd Chapel, United Methodist Church in Kents Store. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Fluvanna Rescue Squad. James and Joan often expressed their gratitude toward the vigilant and caring members of this organization. Sheridan Funeral Home of Kents Store is in charge of arrangements.
