Curtis-Britch & Bouffard Funeral Home - Newport Obituary

Joan “Joanie” Binns, 62, of Norton Vermont passed away June 8th at her home. Joanie was born on August 13, 1957 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Joanie came to the Northeast Kingdom at a young age to Earth People’s Park and ultimately made Norton, Vermont her forever home. Joanie worked at Quimby Country for most of her life, first as their gardener and lastly as their manager receiving recognition from the Vermont legislature for her work. Joanie was many things—a gardener, a lover of animals, baker of amazing cookies, but most of all a friend to all from any walk of life. She is survived by her daughter, Kate (Binns) Gomez, and son-in-law, Ismael Gomez.  Joanie was part of a large family that included, Andrew and Linda Shrake, Bruce and Janet Shrake, David and Janet Shrake, Laura Clark, and Michael and Jeannie Shrake, and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her father, Captain Francis Shrake, mother, Noreen Flint, and older sister Mary Anne Montoya. A service will be held at Curtis-Britch & Bouffard Funeral Home (1199 Railroad St) in Island Pond on Tuesday, June 16th at 10 AM. Due to current conditions, the service will be limited to very close family and friends. We ask that you do something that would make her smile to honor her life. Her family would like to request that donations be sent in lieu of flowers to either the Island Pond Public Library (49 Mill St, Island Pond, VT 05846) or the Pope Memorial Frontier Animal Shelter, 502 Strawberry Acres. Newport, Vermont 05855. On-line condolences at curtis-britch.com. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Curtis-Britch & Bouffard Funeral Home, locally family owned and operated.

Not sure what to say?

We met Joanie on one of our many trips to VT. She was such a kind person and always caring. We got engaged on one of our trips to VT and she was the first person to find out as it was January in VT and she happened to be the first person we saw that week! We are terribly sorry to hear of her passing. VT won’t be the same. She made it so special for us.

I am so sorry to hear of Joannies passing. I have many fond memories of Joanie and Bobby.

Im so sad to hear of Joanies passing. I knew she had a difficult time without Bob. She was a kind, compassionate woman who had no problem telling you what was on her mind. I loved her for that and many other attributes. RIP Joanie. I know you will

Joanie was simply put one of the greatest human beings I've had the pleasure to know. She always welcomed me into her home as if I was just another daughter. She could always bring a smile to your face, had plentiful amounts of cookies, jam, and pickles on hand to share, and could spout off the most random and wonderful facts. She's greatly missed. Much love and virtual hugs to my mon amie, Kate.

I just loved Joanie and Bob. Such wonderful, laid back, intellectual, kind souls are together again. Thinking of you Kate and family. I can say that memories of our visits at the video store will be forever in my heart. ❤

Joanie was an exceptional human being. I had the pleasure of meeting her through Jan B. many years ago and Loved her the minute I met her and Bobby. This is a great loss to us, but a wonderful angel to heaven. R.I. P. Joanie . I am so sorry for your loss. May your memories bring you comfort and Peace.

Joanie will be missed by many! I enjoyed our chats and her humor. Fly high my friend.

I loved joanie and Bobby for 40 yrs.

I met Joanie back in the early 1970's at Earth Peoples Park, so sad to hear of her passing. RIP my old friend.
