Joan Wells Purser Stacy, died in Lumberton on May 9, 2017. She was 82.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM at Trinity Episcopal Church in Lumberton on Saturday, May 13, 2017 followed by a visitation with the family in the church parish hall.
Born in Charlotte, NC, on November 26, 1934, she was the daughter of John Raymond Purser, Jr. and Harriet Rockwell Purser. She was married to late Horace Edney Stacy, Jr.
Mrs. Stacy was educated at Central High School in Charlotte and at UNC- Chapel Hill where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1956. When she and her husband Horace married on June 29, 1957, they established their home in Lumberton where she resided for 59 years. Her first year in Lumberton, she taught 7th grade at Rowland Norment Elementary School.
A lifelong Episcopalian, Mrs. Stacy devoted her time and talents to her church family serving on the altar guild, Episcopal Churchwomen, and areas of Christian education. She was an active member in the Junior Service League, Colonial Dames, Gardenettes Garden Club, and the Lumberton Book Club. She also enjoyed time spent with her tennis group as well as cheering for her beloved Tar Heels. A special gift she shared with her children, family, and friends was her love and knowledge of birds.
She is survived by her children, Robin Stacy Melvin and her husband Brinkley, of Montreat, NC, Jody Stacy Layne and her husband Steve, of Chapin, SC, Walter Mark Stacy of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; her sister, Susan Purser MacKinnon of Portland, Oregon; two sisters-in-law, Louise S. Reams of St. Petersburg, FL and Marilyn S. Collins of Charlotte, NC; nieces Julie Huffaker and Ellen Sung; six beloved grandsons, Parker Brinkley Melvin and his wife Elizabeth, Mark Robinson Melvin, Michael Stacy Melvin, Steven Walker Layne, Greer Kinsman Layne, and William Tripp Layne; and her great- granddaughter, Rosemary Joan Melvin.

Mrs. Stacy led a beautiful and full life. She was the quintessential example of a Mother that taught Love, Grace and Strong Family Values everyday of her life through example by the way she lived her life and led her family. She will be missed, remembered and LOVED.

Joan was such a special lady to my son and I for years at the UNC Football games. She and Horace sat beside us in the Pope Box for many years. She watched my son grow up and become a student at UNC and then become a Teacher, of which she was so proud. Two very special folks, that we were blessed to get to know. Our love to the family.
