I had the pleasure of being a student in a number of Dr. Todd's ancient history and historiography classes at SJS in the early 1970's. She has been an inspiration to me in so many ways. Her manner of teaching is so memorable and descriptive that I always felt I was right there in those ancient times and events. I regret only that I haven't kept in touch with her over the years. She will never be forgotten and there will never be another like her.

We are very saddened to learn of the passing of Joan Todd. She was a wonderful person who embraced life to its fullest and was simply fun to be around. She was also a great and dear friend to our aunt, Irma Eichhorn who also taught history at SJSU. We are forever appreciative for the wonderful memorial service Joan hosted at her house for our Aunt.

Joan Todd was an original. She set a shining example of how to live fully, with intensity and passion. She was deeply principled and always stood for those principles. Her classes at SJSU were rigorous investigations that blended method with subject, demonstrations in how an historian should think. I feel so fortunate to have been her student.

I graduated from SJSU in 1969. She was one of my most memorable professors. This story of her life further amazes me.

While we always knew this day would come, it's hard to believe we no longer have this wonderful woman with us. Her intelligence, creativity, and excitement for her various passions were amazing, and a testament as to how marvelous life could be. My husband, David Apple, and I were lucky to be included in many of her New Year's Day parties, and truly enjoyed the eclectic gathering of both people and food.
