TURNER, Joan- September 20, suddenly at Leicester Royal Infirmary, aged 87 years, of Windsor Street, Barrow, dear wife of the late Arthur, very much loved mum of Susan, Wendy, David and Ray and grandma of Martin, Duncan, Philip, Callum, Tim, Richard, Simon and Christopher, mother in law of Ray, John, Rob and Judy, aunt of Margaret. Service in Trinity Church Centre, Barrow on Friday September 28 at 10.45am prior to cremation. Family flowers only please, donations, if so desired, for the Trinity Church Centre. This is the eulogy written for Joan by her children:

Born: Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire, 27th May, 1920

Joan’s parents came to Barrow from Leeds before the First World War and had two daughters, Eileen and Joan.

Joan went to the Girls Grammar School in Barrow and after secretarial training – including a time working for the Bishop of Barrow at Aldingham – went to work for the railway.

She enlisted at the outbreak of the war, joining the ATS. After basic training...
