Angelus Funeral Home - San Antonio Obituary

JoAnn Castillo (nee Gianotti) was born September 30, 1939 and passed away August 6, 2022.  She was born in San Antonio to Frank and Lucille Gianotti.

JoAnn had a caring, beautiful nature.  She selflessly gave of herself to so many in her life. After her husband Gilbert passed in 1979, she never remarried. JoAnn raised her two daughters on her own and was a devoted mother.  JoAnn was known as the fun Aunt and many gathered in her welcoming home over the years.

She lived next door to her parents and often made her famous iced tea and fried chicken for those that visited. She loved life and loved to laugh and smile.  She always thought of everyone else first and remembered everyone’s birthday.

JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Lucille Gianotti, her husband Gilbert Castillo, her brothers Frank Gianotti and Eugene Gianotti, and her sister Blanche Garza.

She is survived by her daughters Janelle Brewer and Gina Castillo, son-in-law Kent, and numerous family members and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and loved her.

Not sure what to say?

Aunt Joann,
You are now reunited with Uncle Gilbert. I will always treasure the many wonderful moments we shared as a family during holidays, summer breaks, or the times we would stop in to say hello. You always brought a smile to us all. I will never forget your loving and gentle nature. May you rest in peace with our Heavenly Father.

We’re so sorry to hear of Aunt JoAnn’s recent passing. Though it’s been too long since I’ve seen her or my cousins, I always remember her kindness, humor, and sweet humility that she had. I remember the many laughs that she, Uncle Gilbert, and my parents had. I know that she is with Uncle Gilbert once again. I pray for comfort and healing for my cousins and hope that we can reconnect and share more great memories and even make some new ones.

My dear Joann, you will be dearly missed. I have so many fond memories of you and my brother and the love you shared with me and my family. You were always such a devoted mother and wife. The laughter and joy you brought to every gathering is only a reflection of the wonderful wife, mother, aunt and sister in law we all came to love. May our blessed mother guide you to heaven. You will forever be in our hearts. I will truly miss our long talks and heartfelt conversations. Thank you for being...

Thank you Aunt JoAnn for all the wonderful memories over the years. You were always so kind and sincere when you welcomed us into your home. You were such a strong mother and loving Aunt. May our blessed mother guide you to eternal rest to join your loving husband. Prayers to our cousins Janelle and Gina in this most difficult time.

Aunt JoAnn will be truly missed by all! We all have such fond memories of her and thank her for making our childhood so memorable. We always looked forward to visiting her and the girls while we waited for Uncle Gilbert to come home from work. Her delicious spaghetti was enhanced by the after dinner story telling which Aunt JoAnn had a natural gift of being an incredible story teller as we enjoyed both the hilarious as well as the scary ghost stories. Aunt JoAnn will always be remembered as...

JoAnn was our neighbor across the street. My sisters would talk to her often and help her out when she or her daughter needed something. She was so thoughtful and fun. Very sweet lady. She would always make it a point to come over and say Hi when she saw a rental car in our driveway. She would know that I was in town. I always appreciated that she took the time to come visit. May you rest in peace, JoAnn.

Oh my Aunt Jo. She was everything to me when I was a child. She was my favorite Aunt, and I loved being with her when I was an itty-bitty girl. Then came Janelle and Gina, and we had some of the best times of my childhood. Whenever we spoke (as an adult), the first thing she would ask me is if I was ever going to move back to San Antonio. Sadly, after many years, I told her "no Aunt Jo, I don't' think it's going to happen." So we'd spend the rest of the conversation talking about the...

JoAnn was kind, sweet, engaging, and had a heart of gold. She was caring and beautiful. Her smile and laughter filled a room! One of my fondest memories is her taking my hand in hers and whispering to me to take care of my husband and watch after him. She knew the value of having a commitment to a marriage and caring for someone you love. Gary and I didn't have the opportunity to visit often with JoAnn, but when we did, she easily picked up a conversation as if was just yesterday that we...

My sweetest memory of JoAnn is having lunch with her and Janelle at Jackala. So kind and sweet with an infectious laugh and a heart of gold. I loved talking to her on the phone about my family and The Spurs. You’ll will be missed but the Lord gained an angel in heaven.
Condolences to Janelle and Gina. Sending love and prayers.
