Andrews Mortuary and Crematory - Market Street Chapel - Wilmington Obituary

JoAnn Platt Dowdy, age 82, of Wilmington, NC passed away peacefully on July 2, 2016, surrounded by her family.  She was born in the Charleston, SC area on August 5, 1933 to Baynard Seabrook Platt and Anna Baldwin Platt.  JoAnn is survived by her daughters DeLonna Dowdy Echols and Gina Dowdy Ide, and her son Joseph Taylor Dowdy, who was her devoted caregiver for many years prior to her death. The great joys of her life were her grandchildren, and she is survived by grandson Douglas Cameron Echols, Jr. and wife Bailey, granddaughters Anna Baldwin Echols and Grace Ellen Ide, and by great-grandson Walker Reid Echols.

JoAnn is also survived by her dear family friend, Evan Watts, and siblings Sandra Etheridge, BayNarda Marvin (Henry), Pamela Glass, Frances Dantzler (Ellis) and Seabrook Platt (Donna).  She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Karen Lee Redmond, and by her beloved son-in-law Douglas Cameron Echols.

JoAnn made her home in Wilmington as a young bride.  She was an expert seamstress who enjoyed making fine clothing for her family and her many clients in Wilmington.  After retiring in 1981, she spent the happiest years of her life caring for her young grandchildren, and she was proudest of being their beloved Grandmama.

The family wishes to thank Lower Cape Fear Hospice for providing comfort to JoAnn and her family in the days preceding her passing.

A private service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice at 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401-7335.  Online condolences may be made at www.andrewsmortuarycom.

Not sure what to say?

Dear DeLonna and family, I am so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. I can remember as a young girl thinking that your Mom was the prettiest lady in the neighborhood and I always hoped to grow up looking like her. She was always very kind to me. Prayers for your family as you grieve her loss.

Joseph,

My thoughts and prayers have been with you for many days now. Losing a mother is always hard but losing a mother the way you have, after care-taking for so many years and doing daily life with her for so long has to be about as painful as it will get for you. And for that, I am so sorry. I hope you allow the Lord to be healing balm for your deep wounds. Please know that your friends love you.

Dear Joe:

I am so sorry that you, Delonna and Gina have lost your Mom. Iris and I have all of you in our thoughts as you go through the coming days.

Dear Joseph, Your Mother Joann was very dear to me. I will miss her very much. May the Lord wrap you and your family in His loving care as you go through the days ahead.
Sincerely,
Catherine from Liberty Commons
