JoAnn Platt Dowdy, age 82, of Wilmington, NC passed away peacefully on July 2, 2016, surrounded by her family. She was born in the Charleston, SC area on August 5, 1933 to Baynard Seabrook Platt and Anna Baldwin Platt. JoAnn is survived by her daughters DeLonna Dowdy Echols and Gina Dowdy Ide, and her son Joseph Taylor Dowdy, who was her devoted caregiver for many years prior to her death. The great joys of her life were her grandchildren, and she is survived by grandson Douglas Cameron Echols, Jr. and wife Bailey, granddaughters Anna Baldwin Echols and Grace Ellen Ide, and by great-grandson Walker Reid Echols.
JoAnn is also survived by her dear family friend, Evan Watts, and siblings Sandra Etheridge, BayNarda Marvin (Henry), Pamela Glass, Frances Dantzler (Ellis) and Seabrook Platt (Donna). She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Karen Lee Redmond, and by her beloved son-in-law Douglas Cameron Echols.
JoAnn made her home in Wilmington as a young bride. She was an expert seamstress who enjoyed making fine clothing for her family and her many clients in Wilmington. After retiring in 1981, she spent the happiest years of her life caring for her young grandchildren, and she was proudest of being their beloved Grandmama.
The family wishes to thank Lower Cape Fear Hospice for providing comfort to JoAnn and her family in the days preceding her passing.
A private service will be held at a later date.
