WELLS FUNERAL SERVICES Obituary

Jo Ann Paul peacefully made her transition to eternity on Friday, February 23, 2018 at Kindred Hospital in Sugar Land, Texas.  Jo Ann was the fourth child of Sidney and Victoria Paul.  She was born at County General Hospital in Los Angeles, California, on November 20, 1937, joining three siblings, including Edward, Sydnetta, and Yvonne.  In the fall of 1938, Sidney and Victoria moved their family to Dayton, Texas, Sidney’s hometown.  Jo Ann married Alton Scott in 1972.  They were the proud parents of Stephen Scott.

Jo Ann went through elementary and high school at Colbert School, graduating in 1954.  Jo Ann went on to Prairie View A. and M. University, graduated in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree, in 1959 she completed a Masters Degree in Education.  Jo Ann had a very successful career as an educator.  She taught in Port Arthur, Dayton, and LaMarque.  She was a consultant with the Texas Education Agency from 1968 through 1986.  After taking a year off to work hard getting her parents’ farm shipshape, she returned to teaching, ultimately retired in 1991.

Keeping her promise to her dad, Sidney Paul, Jo Ann had a rewarding career managing the farm.  After purchasing a tractor, cutter, rake, and baler, she baled hay for herself and others, despite the weather, her age, or health condition - she labored tirelessly.

Jo Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Sidney and Victoria; her first husband, Alton Scott; her brothers, Edward and David; two sisters, Eleanor and Yvonne; and two nephews, David Paul and Kenneth Ross.  Two of her siblings, Lawrence and Starlene died in infancy in the 1940s.

Jo Ann Paul is survived by her only child, Stephen Scott (Miho),  three grandchildren, Kenzo and Elise of San Jose, Ca.; Stephen’s son, Simon, of San Diego, Ca.; two sisters, Sydnetta Ross of Los Angeles, Ca. and Diane Paul Louviere (Wilfred) of Sugar Land, Tx.;  a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Rev. Dwight Pruitt – officiating.

Not sure what to say?

Jo Ann was a bright light for my family. She told me things about my Grandpa Havard I never knew. She and Sis Farris were tight friends, having known each other all their lives. I will never forget her kind heart
Rhonda Farris

I just finished reading ARVETTAS STORY, a family history of the Wrights & other families who settled in Jasper and Liberty Counties. JoAnn is mentioned in the acknowledgment as helping the authors. This precious lady is still sharing her knowledge and love of history. She is missed but not forgotten.

My deepest condolences for your loss. She will forever be in the hearts of many people. She had a way of touching everyone she met. I am very sad.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Stay strong brother..Wayne & O'Dean Scott and family.

I met Jo Ann about 2004. And last spoke to her in 2009 when my mother, Joyce Harrington, passed away. To know her was to love her. The love of Jesus shown through her. She was so very special. My sincere condolences to her family.

I am so very sorry to hear of sweet JoAnn passing away. She and my mom, Sis Farris, were the best of friends. JoAnn was one of the sweetest, hardest working, toughest women I knew. My love to you all.

We want to express our sympathy and let you know that our thoughts are with you.
Your brother,
Alton (Bobby) and Dorothy
