Mueller Funeral Home, Peru Obituary

JoAnn Sauer, cherished wife, mother and grandmother, entered into eternal peace on the evening of Wednesday, September 23, at her home with her family at her side. She had a lengthy and courageous battle with cardiomyopathy, which eventually led to congestive heart failure.

JoAnn was born on July 23, 1948, a daughter of the late Joseph C. and Jean V. Mertel. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Gerhard and her children and their spouses, Tammi and Paul Carus, Jeff and Kim Bernabei, Sara and Ben Cook and Aaron and Amy Sauer. Her 6 grandchildren, Russell, Paul, Sophie, Luke, Lexie, and Harper will remember her as their devoted Oma.

Throughout her life JoAnn thoroughly enjoyed cooking and traveling. Whether a simple morning breakfast or an exciting beach getaway, she willing spent hours in preparation to create lasting memories with her family. JoAnn maintained her zest for life right to the end.

For many years she operated a beauty salon out of her home while raising her children. Eventually, she began a long and dedicated position with Rainbow Travel where she was able share her love of exploring the world while helping others create their own memories.

A memorial mass in celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, October 3 at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Church in Peru with Fr. Gregory Jarzombek, OSB officiating. The family kindly requests that those attending do not wear black. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mueller Funeral Home in Peru. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood or St. Bede Abbey.

Not sure what to say?

Tammi, Paul and family,
Our hearts truly break right along with yours. Your Mom was one of those people who was always smiling and full of joy. We will always remember her from our Peru Catholic days and the many, many events she attended. What a beautiful soul who without a doubt will be missed.

May your memories of the wonderful times you shared with your loved one comfort you and your family, today and always.
