Joanne Altenburg, of Sioux Falls, SD passed away, Saturday July 22nd, 2023, at Avera Heart Hospital.
Joanne (Schoon) was born on March 30th, 1952, in Wagner, SD to Marvin and Mary Schoon. She grew up in Presho, SD and was a proud graduate of Presho High School class of 1970.
She was united in marriage on December 9th, 1972, to Robert Altenburg. This marriage was blessed with three children, Tanya, Dan, and Ryan.
Her main priority was always family. She made sure her children were prepared and was always there for Family and Friends. She was a fan and supporter of her children's athletic and school activities...cheering them on always. She was an angel as a mother and grandmother.
Joanne went out of her way to make friends wherever she was, she was quick to smile and make all around her part of her community. If you’ve had the opportunity to meet or spend time with Joanne...you were greeted with that friendly smile. She took a genuine interest in people and was always there to listen.
Her favorite activities were family time, chats with friends, painting, and gardening. The highlight of the year for her was Christmas and preparing for her family to gather. She spent weeks decorating. The more red, green and gold glitter the better. Every room had its own nativity, as she knew that that was the most important feature.
Joanne is survived by her three children, Tanya, Dan and Ryan; grandchildren, Devin, Maura, Charles, Jack, Calvin and Evie June; Siblings, Jim and Jackie Schoon; as well as many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Mary Schoon; Grandparents, Marion and Gertrude Plooster and Jacob and Pearl Schoon.
Services will be held on Wednesday, July 26th at:
Heritage Funeral Home, 4800 S Minnesota Ave Sioux Falls, SD 57108
Schedule:
4:00 pm Visitation for Family and Friends
5:00 pm Service
6:30 pm Fellowship at the El Riad Shrine Temple located at 510 S Phillips Avenue in Sioux Falls
Interment will be at a later date

Joanne was such a good friend and helped me a lot after my first husband Rod passed. Myself and my children were always welcomed in her home. Such a great person and she will be missed so very much.
