Jody Carpenter Jody Carpenter, (Volunteer) of Manassas, Virginia passed away Saturday, February 25, 2012. Jody was born in Cleveland, Ohio on August 1923. She attended school there as an honor student, member of the National Honor Society and the Philatheon Honor Society. She became a Registered Nurse in 1944, subsequently joining the Army Nurse Corp in January 1945. She retired medically as a 1st Lieutenant in December 1947 having spent 18 months at Walter Reed as a patient.
She and Major Garnet Y. Carpenter, Jr. were married on September 20, 1947. They resided in Waynesboro, Virginia where she was Executive Secretary for Waynesboro Community Chest 1948-1951, on the Waynesboro Easter Seal Board from 1949-1959 and moved to Manassas in November, 1951.
She was a past member of Manassas Junior Women's Club, All Saints Altar and Rosary Society. Her accomplishments include organizing and presiding over the Council of Catholic Women 1952-1955, board member of the Manassas Red Cross from 1958-1962, Secretary (1957) and Vice President (1958) of Junior Women's Club, in 1959 co-chairman of a Junior Women's Club committee to organize classes for handicapped and retarded children, which was the forerunner of Didlake School. She Joined Prince William Hospital Auxiliary in 1963 and was a board member until 1999, then became an associate member. She organized the Candy Striper program and was its chairman until 1999. She also was State Chairperson of the Health and Careers Committee for the Virginia Association of Hospital Auxiliary and on its Board for eight years. She was also on the Honorary Board of Manassas Museum. Jody was honored in 1998-1999 as the City of Manassas Women of the year. She was honorary chairman of Prince William Hospital Circle of Lights in 2001 and was an avid rose cultivator and an avid reader. She was a recipient of the American Campaign Medal, U.S. Army and the World War II Victory Medal, U.S. Army. She was a member of the Retired Nurse Corps Association, Retired Officer's Association, and Disabled American Veterans and a charter member of Women in military service for America. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Garnett Y. Carpenter, Jr.; her parents, Stanley and Emily Gruchacz and a sister, Delores Jones. Survivors include four children, Garnett Y. Carpenter III of Stuart, Florida, Christopher Jon Carpenter of Manassas, Virginia, Joan Lee Moretti and husband Victor J. of Catlett, Virginia and Kimberly Spear and husband Patrick of College Park, Maryland,two grandchildren, Matthew Spear and wife Brenda of Elkridge, Maryland and Joshua Lee Clouser of Catlett, Virginia and grandson Ayden Spear. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at Pierce Old Town Chapel, 9320 West St. Manassas where a rosary will be said. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. Thursday, March 1, 2012 at All Saints Catholic Church, 9300 Stonewall Road, Manassas with Rev. Robert C. Cilinski officiating. Interment will be private at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, Virginia with military honors. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Benedictine Sisters Monastery, 9535 Linton Hall Road, Bristow, Virginia 20136 in loving memory of Jody Carpenter.
