Dr Joe passed peacefully away in the home he had lived in for 45 years in Wallingford from congestive heart disease. He was born into the royal family of the Ashanti people in Ghana; the land of Kente Weaving Cloth and cocoa and gold. He has four living siblings and many nephews and nieces. He planned one day to build a house that welcomed all to visit. His notable uncle, Joe Appiah who married Lady Peggy Cripps, was a leader for Independence and also a model that made Dr. Joe search for justice for all. He became a physician and counselor, diplomat and educator. His great joy was to work with youth and especially Global Technology which produced ten trips with students to Africa. He was passionate about building relationships and connecting people and was loved and will be missed.

I am so very sad to hear the news of Joe's passing. I will be forever grateful for his friendship. Among other fond memories, I will cherish the time he taught me his chicken soup recipe, passed along the recipe for almond torte, took awesome video footage at my wedding and just showed up for others in any way he could. Generous with time and attention, he lived his values and cared deeply for others.

I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. I first met Dr. Joe many years ago because of a mis-directed phone call, and he invited me to his birthday party anyway. He was so open and welcoming, and such an inspiration in how to make and keep friends. I'll miss him.

I only lived in Seattle for two years, but Dr. Joe was a frequent presence during my time there. He often visited the bookstore where I worked, and seeing him come through the door always meant great stories were on the way. I loved hearing about his life and the people he knew, and was so touched that he remembered my birthday each year. Dr. Joe was a beautiful person - we need more like him in the world. My condolences and love to his family.

Joe was a relative of mine by marriage as Peggy Appiah was my aunt. He always spoke most warmly about her and kept in contact with her family over the years most diligently. He was such a kind person, always wanting to help others and he loved keeping in touch with his worldwide family. He is responsible for introducing me to Costco! God Bless you Joe.

Thank you, Joe, for your ideas and support as I helped build and establish the community library in Yordan Nu. You became a brother and a friend and I will miss you, and your birthday wishes and contact each year. I will add another volume of your Tony's encyclopedia "Africana" in your memory for the library. Gentle, sweet Joe, goodbye for now. Marilyn Deer
