Joe Frazier, the former heavyweight champion who handed Muhammad Ali his first defeat yet had to live forever in his shadow, has died after a brief final fight with liver cancer. He was 67.

Despite the extremely unpleasant nature of boxing, and especially the destructive effects it has on so many, Mr. Frazier brought the same amount of dignity to it as Mr. Marciano. They both did it the right way every time, and did their talking between the bells.
