Joe Messina

He was an amazing musician as well as an individual.

My deepest condolences goes out to Joe’s family. He was a good friend of my moms and they kept contact for many years until my mom (Lepa Marentette/Drakich) passed away at 84. They performed together for many years in the early days. He arranged and wrote many songs for my mom in the Metropole Supper Club in Windsor Ontario and did work with her in Detroit at Hitsville. I have wonderful memories of Mr. Messina. He was always so much fun. I am sorry for your great loss.

In October of 2021, I watched Standing in the Shadows of Motown for the first time. I loved it, especially seeing the camaraderie between the musicians this documentary was about. Among my many favorite scenes, was any and every scene in which Mr. Messina is shown. There wasn't a shot where he wasn't smiling! I was elated to see he was alive and well 20 years later! Heartfelt condolences for his passing. Mr. Messina shaped my early years with the 'Funk Brothers' and their iconic and legendary music. Our R&B band never forgot the dream of being like them. The Army had other ideas in 1969. The dream is long gone, but we still have his music! Thank you Mr. Messina!
